Atoms

The old atoms in your body hum
of when the universe still glowed
in the time before time
the weaving of the fabric just begun
and now, here you are, swaying
in a tiny hammock of spacetime
a gently buzzing swarm of particles
recalling birth and decay and vacuum

but for now, you are.

Cosmic Order (2013) - A corotating plane of dwarf galaxies orbits the Andromeda galaxy, the Milky Way's twin

#universe #cosmology #astronomy #astrophysics #astrodon #nature #cover #covers #naturecovers #space #science #research #andromeda #m31 #galaxy #milkyway #satellite #galaxies

Giant spiral galaxies are assembled from smaller systems through a process known as hierarchical clustering. In orbit around these giants are dwarf galaxies, which are presumably remnants of the galactic progenitors. Recent studies of the dwarf galaxies of the Milky Way have lead some astronomers to suspect that their orbits are not randomly distributed. This suspicion, which challenges current theories of galaxy formation, is now bolstered by the discovery of a plane of dwarf galaxies corotating as a coherent pancake-like structure around the Andromeda galaxy, the Milky Ways close neighbour and in many respects its twin. The structure is extremely thin yet contains about half of the dwarf galaxies in the Andromeda system. The authors report that 13 of the 15 satellites in the plane share the same sense of rotation. On the cover, a true colour image of the Andromeda galaxy, with two satellite galaxies visible, by Jean-Charles Cuillandre (CFHT) and Giovanni Anselmi (Coelum Astronomia).

So, if we live in a multiverse, does that imply all verses are similar to our verse? Could there be be pods of different verses that clump around similar physics? Hence the infinite multiverse is a collection of differing pods in the infinite? Far more important are there an infinite number of Dave’s typing on an infinite fediverse?

Physicists have proposed a new theory to explain the origin of the universe. They suggest that the universe was born from a quantum fluctuation of an inflaton field, which drove a rapid expansion of space. The theory could solve some of the mysteries of cosmology and quantum gravity.

A human being is a spatially and temporally limited piece of the whole of what we call the "universe". #Supernova⁣e, like the one currently visible with small telescopes in the galaxy Messier 101, 25 million lightyears away, are among the most violent events in the #universe.

They are explosions of massive stars, when these reach the end of their lives. In events like these, all the heavier elements than iron we find, are formed.
Only explosions that big have the energy to squeeze atoms' nuclei together to fuse them into lead, uranium etc.

Occasionally we also use the lasers to play with cats on other planets 🐱

Four bright yellow lasers appear from the bottom, converging towards a point at the centre of the image.

⚫️ #BlackHoles are usually thought of as something that will destroy and consume everything in the #universe.

#Hubble telescope recently captured a black hole weighing about 20 mil. Suns flying at millions of km per hour.

🌠 A black hole leaves behind a 200,000 light year long trail of newly born stars (2x diameter of the Milky Way). The black hole is moving through dense clouds of gas and dust, at speed which prevents it from absorbing them. As a result, the gas and dust are turning into stars.

A black, deep space image is dominated by a large central object. This object resembles a snowflake-like feature with a bright white core and 8 pinkish orange spikes. It is surrounded by additional wisps of pinkish orange and blue gas. In reality, this “snowflake” is actually two colliding galaxies with merging cores. The brilliant light from the star formation surrounding these cores creates diffraction spikes, an optical effect that occurs when bright light interacts with a telescope’s optics. The background is punctuated with scattered red, white and orange galaxies of various shapes and sizes.

I really miss the night sky in #Chile , in particular the Magellanic Clouds – two dwarf galaxies orbiting our home galaxy, the Milky Way.

In the Mapudungun language in south-central Chile they are known as lafken, labken or künchalabken (“the lagoons”), as well as rünanko (“the water wells”).

Here I photographed them above ESO's Paranal Observatory in northern Chile.

This is an artist's impression of a runaway supermassive black hole that was ejected from its host galaxy. Black field with white, yellow, and red galaxies. A black hole near bottom left corner plows through space, leaving a diagonal trail of newborn stars stretching back to the black hole's parent galaxy in the upper right corner.

I took this pic at ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile with a diffraction grating in front of the camera lens, thus getting a spectrum of everything in the field of view.

You can see that the gas in the M42 nebula shines at very specific colours, corresponding to different elements (hydrogen, helium, oxygen...)

The telescope lasers (left) shine at a single specific colour, so their spectrum (right) only shows that one colour.

A long exposure image of the night sky, showing many stars, including the Orion constellation. There are many rainbow-like thin horizontal lines, each one caused by a different star. Some yellow lines (lasers) cross the image diagonally.

Using ALMA, astronomers have detected huge amounts of hot gas in a distant still-forming cluster of galaxies, when the universe was only 3 billion years old! This goes to show how early these massive structures form.

More details in the ESO press release: https://www.eso.org/public/news/eso2304/

and in this ESOCast video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDumeEMkmME

This image shows several galaxies distributed over a black background. The galaxies have colours that range from blue, orange-red, yellow and white. In the centre of the image is a larger concentration of galaxies. Overlaid on the galaxies in the middle is a blue and semi-transparent region. It has a clumpy form with indistinct contours. There are smaller, dark blue regions around it.
