Giant spiral galaxies are assembled from smaller systems through a process known as hierarchical clustering. In orbit around these giants are dwarf galaxies, which are presumably remnants of the galactic progenitors. Recent studies of the dwarf galaxies of the Milky Way have lead some astronomers to suspect that their orbits are not randomly distributed. This suspicion, which challenges current theories of galaxy formation, is now bolstered by the discovery of a plane of dwarf galaxies corotating as a coherent pancake-like structure around the Andromeda galaxy, the Milky Ways close neighbour and in many respects its twin. The structure is extremely thin yet contains about half of the dwarf galaxies in the Andromeda system. The authors report that 13 of the 15 satellites in the plane share the same sense of rotation. A previous study of Proxima Centauri using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) reported an unknown source of light spectrum signals that could belong to a second planet. To better understand if the signal originated from another planet orbiting the star, Damasso et al. analyzed a 17.5-year-long time series of high-precision radial velocities using an exoplanet detection method that tracks a star's light spectrum. They determined that the signal is likely unrelated to shifts in the star's magnetic field and may indicate the presence of a planet with a greater mass than Earth, although more evidence is needed to confirm its existence.

On 30 August 2007 Voyager 2 began to cross the termination shock, a boundary produced by the inter-action of the Sun with the rest of the Galaxy, where the supersonic solar wind abruptly slows as it presses outward against the surrounding interstellar matter. Five Letters in this issue present the data that the probe sent back. The Voyager 2 crossings occurred about 1.5 billion kilometres closer to the Sun than those of Voyager 1, illustrating the asymmetry of the heliosphere. The results from the plasma experiment [p. 63], low-energy particle [p. 67], cosmic ray [p. 71], magnetic field [p. 75] and plasma-wave detectors [p. 77] reveal a complex and dynamic shock, reforming itself in hours rather than days. It may be decades before another probe crosses the termination shock but remote observations can now bridge the gap - as shown by Wang et al. who report measurements of energetic neutral atoms in the heliosheath from the STEREO A and B spacecraft that complement the Voyager in situ observations made at the same time [Letter p. 81]. The cover shows the William E. Gordon Telescope at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. Jason Hessels and his colleagues used the telescope in their attempt to clarify the physical nature of the only known source of repeating fast radio bursts. Lasting about a millisecond each, these bursts come from a star-forming region in a dwarf galaxy. Hessels and his co-authors observed that the bursts were nearly 100% linearly polarized and had a very high Faraday rotation measure. Such results require the presence of an environment of extreme magnetized plasma, which has previously been seen only around massive black holes. As a result, the authors suggest that the radio bursts possibly come from a neutron star in such an environment (although the team notes that, in principle, the bursts could originate from a neutron star surrounded by either a highly magnetized wind nebula or a supernova remnant). They propose that ancient Martian calderas might have been misinterpreted as impact craters that were degraded by erosion. If supervolcanoes were common on ancient Mars, it would have major implications for estimates of volcanic outgassing, climate evolution and formation of the planets layered, fragmented upper crust. Here are two images of ESO’s Very Large Telescope, as seen from the air above the mountain top where it sits. The surrounding area is a mountainous desert region, the Atacama Desert in Chile. The left picture shows the telescopes under construction. Each of the large unit telescopes is cylindrical in shape, with the leftmost one nearing completion while progressively less has been built of the telescopes on the right. Pew pew! Here's a pic of the #MilkyWay I took a few years ago from ESO's Paranal Observatory in #Chile. The four yellow lines are lasers from the Very Large Telescope –– we use them to excite sodium atoms high up in the atmosphere, creating artificial "stars" that allow us to correct atmospheric turbulence and get very sharp images.

Occasionally we also use the lasers to play with cats on other planets 🐱

An image of the night sky sprinkled with thousands of stars. A bright orange band crosses the image diagonally like a river, split in two by a central dark band of dust. Many other thin dusty filaments fill up the image, like smoke. Bright nebulae with vivid colours like yellow or magenta are spread throughout the image. #Hubble telescope recently captured a black hole weighing about 20 mil. Suns flying at millions of km per hour.

🌠 A black hole leaves behind a 200,000 light year long trail of newly born stars (2x diameter of the Milky Way). The black hole is moving through dense clouds of gas and dust, at speed which prevents it from absorbing them. As a result, the gas and dust are turning into stars.

$A black, deep space image is dominated by a large central object. This object resembles a snowflake-like feature with a bright white core and 8 pinkish orange spikes. It is surrounded by additional wisps of pinkish orange and blue gas. In reality, this “snowflake” is actually two colliding galaxies with merging cores. The brilliant light from the star formation surrounding these cores creates diffraction spikes, an optical effect that occurs when bright light interacts with a telescope’s optics. The background is punctuated with scattered red, white and orange galaxies of various shapes and sizes.$

I really miss the night sky in #Chile , in particular the Magellanic Clouds – two dwarf galaxies orbiting our home galaxy, the Milky Way.

In the Mapudungun language in south-central Chile they are known as lafken, labken or künchalabken (“the lagoons”), as well as rünanko (“the water wells”).

Here I photographed them above ESO's Paranal Observatory in northern Chile.

You can see that the gas in the M42 nebula shines at very specific colours, corresponding to different elements (hydrogen, helium, oxygen...)

The telescope lasers (left) shine at a single specific colour, so their spectrum (right) only shows that one colour.
