Several years ago while attending a national conference, I listened to a panel of executives from a large software company talk about their wish to promote open sharing of management data about higher education administration at colleges and universities so anyone at a university could do research using the data and publish their results for others to see. Having already led institutional research at a large public university for nearly 30 years at the time, I stood up and told them it was a bad idea for at least two reasons: (1) It ignores that fact that many people do not understand such data and produce nonsensical results from it, which I have personally witnessed. (2) University leaders care about messaging and want the ability to exercise some control over what is made public. In hindsight, I wished I had asked the distinguished panel members how they felt about the idea of their company openly sharing management data with all employees to do research and publish the results for everyone at the company to see.

#USA #Israel #Palestine #Surveillance #Universities #FreedomOfSpeech: "Alongside Israel advocacy groups like the Brandeis Center, the International Legal Forum, and the David Horowitz Freedom Center, StandWithUs has spent years trying to shut down criticism of Israel on college campuses, often by weaponizing civil rights law. The groups allege that, while the political speech may be protected by the First Amendment, it fosters a campus climate of antisemitism in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits federally funded programs from discriminating on the basis of race, color, or national origin. As students have ramped up pro-Palestinian demonstrations over the past month, Israel advocacy groups have escalated a pressure campaign of their own.

Earlier this month, StandWithUs sent an open letter to thousands of universities addressed to the general counsel and vice president of student affairs, outlining actions colleges could take to ensure compliance with Title VI. The group’s recommendations include requiring student identification cards at protests, monitoring university communication channels for “biased statements about Israel,” and investigating student groups for ties to Hamas. The group has also sent a surge of direct letters urging administrators to clamp down on specific Palestine solidarity campus events."

Thinking about the #enshittification of education, specifically #universities

Who is the actual customer in a university, and what is our product?

The customer isn’t really students, and the product isn’t really knowledge and skills.

The customer is (mainly) business and the product is (reasonably) skilled labour.

More than that, a significant portion of the cost of our product is borne by the product itself, often in the form of long-term debt, justified on the basis that university grads will (eventually) benefit financially from investing in their degrees.

@TheDonsieLass

Yes, behind the data is the business model forced on #universities... that's always been clear to me (especially when I was still working)!

Some of the shine has come off the UK's #universities as an 'export' business. They're not delivering such a great service to non-EU students.

Non-EU foreign students are more likely to get lower class degrees than home/EU #students.

Interestedly in many cases EU students seem less likely to get lower class degrees than UK-domestic students... (which was certainly my experience of EU students when I was still a working academic).

(yes, I know calling universities a business is unpopular)

Chart: Non-EU students are far more likely to get lower class degrees. Share of students receiving a 2:2 or third-class degree 2021-22

Russell Group - EU/UK 10% - Non-EU 21%
Other universities EU 19% - UK 23% - Non-EU 33%

U.Sussex UK 12% - EU - 17% - NonEU - 40%
Queen's U, Belfast - EU 9% - UK 15% - Non-EU 48%
Nottingham Trent U - EU 20% - UK 25% - nonEU 55%

well, I guess its all relative - these are often not out of line (and often less) than CEOs working in the private sector managing similar sized organisations.... the same debate is often had about VCs of #universities.... the wider argument is about pay disparities across the economy, of which these salaries are just on part.

But, your concern is not unprecedented nor uncommon

@epistatacadam

Hmmm... I think I'd agree on the self-development point, but on the economic issue, the data (given the lag in reaping the benefits) might suggest a latter PhD has even less chance of earning a return (although of course there are many non-pecuniary rewards from research)... but certainly all PG degrees are seen as cashews by business-shaped #universities

For those of you who are wondering about #universities as engines of #socialmobility, and the variance in 'performance' between them, here's the latest from HEPI.... my own university (Lancaster) has risen nine places, but still remains relatively low on the list (still at 48th) - they should be doing much better....

The #UMontana is cancelling more than 5,000 #journals from #Elsevier, #TaylorAndFrancis, and #Wiley, forced by "rising journal…#prices and a stagnant #budget…The library has seen a $700,000 reduction in money received since fiscal year 2020."

Our paper “No Research on a Dead Planet” is out today! Aaron Thierry is very much the lead author, but it’s been great working on this together with AT, Laura Horn and Charlie Gardner. Why do #Universities, #ClimateEmergency declarations and all, still largely continue with #BusinessAsUsual? For us it’s about #CognitiveDissonance as well as the structures of neoliberal #HE. HE needs to change & lead on true #ClimateAction. Open access

Photo of a placard saying “no research on a dead planet”, with a cut out picture of a dead planet on the side. I made the placard this morning; the image of the dead planet comes from rhis Flickr account which had Commons Usage rights so hopefully OK

The sign I made for this week's strike. Double sided and complete with details and sources in footnotes. (Painted on a recycled Greens coreflute we had out the front of our unit at the last state election.)

#UniMelb #UniMelbStrikes #NTEU #union #strike #WageTheft #universities

A freshly painted protest sign on white coreflute. Bold lettering in black and purple reads: "Library staff on strike for ongoing jobs (1) with safe workloads (2)". Footnotes written in black sharpie read: "(1) NTEU claim: a secure work target of 80% (EFT & staff) in continuing contracts by the end of the EA term. (2) NTEU claims include: filling vacancies promptly; backfill absent staff; consultation on workload allocation policies; default of ≥40% research component for new academic roles. Source: NTEU UniMelb Heads of Agreement proposal (2023)."
A freshly painted protest sign on white coreflute. Bold lettering in black and purple reads: "#1 uni in Australia for wage theft (1) and executive pay (2)". Footnotes written in black sharpie read: "(1) UniMelb has had to repay ~$45 million in stolen wages to date. This is the highest tab in Australia's broken uni system. Sources: NTEU Wage Theft report (Feb '23); UniMelb website (Apr '23). (2) 10 UniMelb execs are paid more than the PM, and VC Duncan Maskell is paid $1.5 m/year. This remuneration is higher than any other Australian university. Source: 2022 annual reports."

#Academics, #universities & #GovernmentAgencies are overhauling or ending #research programs designed to counter the spread of #online #misinformation amid a #legal campaign from #conservative politicians & activists who accuse them of colluding w/ #tech companies to #censor #RightWing views.

The escalating campaign — led by #JimJordan & other #Republicans in #Congress & state gov — has cast a pall over programs that study not just #political falsehoods but also quality of #medical info online.

There's an interesting piece in the Observer about the decline of regional Art Schools (not yet online), which makes the case that one of he reasons for the increasingly middle class (privileged) character of our culture & arts is the result of these local institutions decline, as their student body was mostly drawn from less privileged social groupings.... it makes sense, as the increasing move to art at #universities raised the costs of experimenting with your creativity as a young person.

"The committee found too many examples of the OfS "acting like an instrument of the government's policy agenda rather than an independent regulator"".

Shocked. This is my shocked face.

Data from the @chronicle: "Nearly 80% of [Americans] with a #college degree said the cost was worth it…[But] the positive attitudes…tend to follow salaries. About 88% of higher earners — those with a household income greater than $100,000 — said their degree benefits outweighed the cost…Only 63% of graduates in households with incomes less than $50,000 said their degree benefits outweighed the cost."

“Universities should see themselves as microcosms of society, where a spirit of exploration encourages people to try new things, to test better options, and to assess the consequences.”

Me, quoted in this article in the Guardian about support for a student-led campaign to make UK university catering entirely plant-based (while obviously still allowing people to bring what they want to eat on campus).

The far right's war on higher ed. & esp. the liberal arts is an attack on democracy. Unless stopped, it will play out on many US campuses.

“This is a test case for a conservative overhaul of higher education – and it isn’t going to stay isolated to New College or Florida.”

-Gender St. faculty, New College, resigned Prof. Clarkson.

Michael O'Neill, writing up some issues about academic workloads following the Variety conference. I think this summarises a lot of what is going on -- of particular note being the increase in admin load that comes with centralising services. We all know this is a bad idea, but upper management of UK universities will not even entertain that thought.

Children's #schools in England (not Wales or Scotland and I don't know about N Ireland). Also not everywhere in England..yet

#Universities also have short term contracts but I know less about this. There are big #strikes in the English University sector at the moment and contracts are apart of the negitiations from bit main Unions, Unison and UCU

New study: "The average proportion of #OpenAccess publications in European countries is significantly higher (39.07%) than the world average (30.16%), with a clear inclination [toward] the #GreenOA route (79.41%) compared to the #GoldOA route (52.30%). Most European research #funders and institutions [#universities] have required researchers to make OA available for their research findings."
