Let's make community colleges and apprenticeships into more-attractive options, and then scale back the massive overexpansion of Ontario universities over the past 30-40 years so that they can focus on teaching people who are actually interested in abstract academic subjects.

I work at a place with quite a hidebound institutional culture. Administrators exploit it mercilessly, but many faculty & staff are only too willing to throw each other under the bus when it's to their advantage.
The union is... better? I guess. However, even union members seem to have the same overall tendencies, if slightly attenuated. It's as if the union leadership's motto is "I didn't get elected to this position so I could take /suggestions/ from mere /members/."
The number of times I've heard "...we don't do things that way here" or "we've never done it like that" (meaning "and we sure as hell aren't going to start") since I came here almost a decade ago is in the hundreds.
Reminding myself of why, every few months, I renew my determination to not care that this place is being gutted of all worker rights and autonomy by rampant administrators and is about to have its funding wildly cut by a university system intent on killing off its teaching universities to fund its R1 flagships and medical centers.

Spent anxious hours last night applying for travel funds from my #union (my #university has discontinued all #faculty travel funding) before the deadline
only to find out that my frantic, mutli-document #travel #funding application was mistargeted. The deadline was for /retroactive/funds (which is still a weird idea).
Luckily, the person receiving the application was extremely gracious, and told me almost all of my work will count for the real #proposal #deadline in January.

Broken 💔 My own university thinking about cutting language degrees. I started out as a modern linguist and I feel really strongly that our retreat from an already low base of language learning is disastrous. Governments have consistently failed to support or mandate language learning at school. Yes, STEM is important, but so is wider cultural understanding. Brexit has further legitimised a 'why bother with foreign stuff' attitude.

Oxford Brookes Music Department has fostered excellent and divergent doctorates. Close to my heat it hosts Oxford Improvisers, a Free Musical Improvisation collective that explores and connects with FMI musicians across the globe.
This narrow-thinking decision is being robustly challenged.
The #university is busy urging us to identify people who will say nice things about us for the QS #Academic and Reputation Surveys. We could do that, or we could stop voluntarily participating in a bullshit ranking system that exists only to preserve privilege & pad the pockets of some parasitic consultants. It’s a tough one.

I just sent in my dissertation. It is finally all out of my control. I have worked so hard on this. No matter what happens, I am confident in the work I've submitted. I feel good enough to send this in and let what will be, be.
Academia has been stressful to a degree I never believed possible. I got through it despite every single setback I've faced, and there have been too many of them to count.
I can get up from this desk now and look into my future. I'm not quite bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, but I can walk away and say: "I've done it. It's over."
Nobody can take that away from me.
I don't know that every tear was worth it. I don't know that every night I stayed up working into the wee hours, or every very early morning start has been repaid. What I do know, is that this is the end of a very long, very difficult chapter. I know it wasn't normal. I know it wasn't what it arguably should have been. And i know that - no matter what happens now - i am so proud of the lessons I have learnt, the skills I've developed and the things, both small and great, I've been able to achieve.
So here's to the future. To travel and messy sleep schedules. To catching up on the reading challenge that is nowhere close to complete. Here's to new challenges and more difficult days ahead. Here's to brighter eyes, and bushier tails, and getting to write another chapter, and then yet another of my own story. Here's to me. I've earned it.

Since the start of Israel’s bombing of Gaza, students at Columbia have organized numerous protests, vigils, and rallies in a show of support for civilians in Gaza. As part of a nationwide “Shut it Down for Palestine” walkout on November 9, SJP and JVP arranged an art installation and rally.
One day later, the groups were suspended for the unauthorized event and “threatening rhetoric and intimidation,” making them ineligible to hold campus events or receive school funding for the remainder of the term.
