The challenge is to age as successfully as we can. For society, the challenge of successful ageing is a paramount issue touching on all aspects of life -- social, economic, medical and spiritual. For the individual, the challenge is to reach old age in optimum health and to develop the resources and attitudes to preserve independence and quality of life for as long as possible.

@freemo I disagree slightly, as there seem to be virtually no polygamous dating relationships in the #Christian community (but also to be fair I’m not up to speed on what the #Mormons are up to in #Utah at the moment), but it also wouldn’t hurt to mention that now that I’m older and no longer in such a culturally (and unfortunately to a degree racially) homogeneous setting as a #Christian college where my peers all have very limited life experiences.

Sigh, taking care of an aging parent has become more challenging. My mother-in-law lives with us and her muscles are getting weak and is bullheaded and won't use the walker in the house and has fallen a couple of times. She zones out when talking to her.
I'm able to work from home a couple of times a week and we both check on her a couple of times a day, a relative that lives in Utah that actually comes to help is awesome.

Any suggestions on home care services in Utah.

#OilAndGas emissions in #Utah a threat to public health, report says

#Pollutants released into the atmosphere with excess #NaturalGas create smog and endanger public health, especially in #Duschesne and #Uintah counties.

by Anastasia Hufham, Oct. 21, 2023

"When natural gas producers waste gas and emit #methane in Utah, it’s not only the economy that suffers, according to a report. Air quality, public health and the environment lose out, too.

"'It’s not just methane,' Ashley Miller, executive director of Breathe Utah, told The Salt Lake Tribune. 'It’s other hazardous #AirPollutants that we really care about for public health. When you have a real serious air quality problem in these areas, there’s people living in these areas, and we want to protect human health as much as we can.'

"In 2016, the report says, air pollution from the oil and gas industry led to eight deaths per million, as well as 1,040 asthma exacerbations per million among #children.

"Oil and gas production sites emit what are called volatile organic compounds, or #VOCs, according to the report, when companies release natural gas into the atmosphere through #flaring, #venting and #leaking.

"Volatile organic compounds create ground-level #ozone, better known as #smog, which is a major public health concern in Utah. The report notes that volatile organic compounds in smog can worsen respiratory conditions, like #asthma, and even cause #HeartDisease. Also, #benzene, another pollutant released during oil and gas production, has been proven to cause #cancer.

The report was published by Synapse Energy Economics, Inc., a research and consulting firm; the Environmental Defense Fund, a nonprofit focused on finding solutions to environmental pollution; and Taxpayers for Common Sense, a nonpartisan watchdog group that advocates for the responsible use of taxpayer dollars.

"The report states that Utah’s #FossilFuel producers released 16 billion cubic feet of natural gas in 2019, and 87% was lost from wells leaking natural gas due to faulty equipment.

"Duschesne and Uintah counties — where 85% of oil and gas wells are concentrated in the state — received F grades from the American Lung Association’s State of the Air report this year. Those two counties cover the Uinta Basin, where the #Uintah and #Ouray Indian Reservation is also located.

"'We really understand the importance and value of the fossil fuel industry in Utah, especially to those communities where it’s really the only source of revenue and jobs,' Miller said.

"Petroleum production in the Uinta Basin isn’t slowing down. The oil industry is booming in Duschesne and Uintah counties, and statewide oil and gas employment grew by 16% between 2021 and 2022.

"Emissions from oil and gas production also have concerning environmental impacts. Oil and gas production is a large emitter of methane, a #GreenhouseGas more powerful than carbon dioxide, which is the largest component of natural gas.

"The Environmental Protection Agency has issued a proposal to reduce methane emissions by ensuring that wells are checked frequently for leaks using monitoring equipment. The proposal would also require companies to continue monitoring wells for emissions until they are plugged after production."

the disadvantage to the path was that it was narrow, winding, rocky, graveled. But the advantage was that it led to the foothills of the mountains, which the freeway did not. So even though the freeway was smoother and straighter, it didn't go where one wanted to go.

How the #NativeAmerican Vote Continues to be Suppressed

by Patty Ferguson-Bohnee
February, 2020

"The right to vote has been an uphill battle for #NativeAmericans. The #VotingRightsAct of 1965 helped to secure and protect that right for many Native Americans and #AlaskaNatives. With the Voting Rights Act, voter participation among Native Americans increased. However, the Supreme Court invalidated the Section 5 preclearance formula in 2013 (Shelby County v. Holder, 570 U.S. 529 (2013)), removing one of the most powerful tools to ensure equal access to the ballot, including Alaska and Arizona, and two jurisdictions in South Dakota with significant Native American and Alaska Native populations. Since the Shelby County decision, efforts to suppress the vote have increased. For Native Americans, these voter suppression efforts can and do have devastating impacts.

"Despite the passage of the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924, many Native Americans living on reservations continued to be excluded from the democratic process. In 1948, Native Americans in #NewMexico and #Arizona successfully litigated their right to vote. #Utah and #NorthDakota became the last states to afford on-reservation Native Americans the right to vote in 1957 and 1958, respectively. When the right to vote was finally secured, voter suppression laws kept Native Americans from voting and seeking elected office. In Arizona, for example, Native Americans could not fully participate in voting until 1970 when the Supreme Court upheld the ban against using literacy tests (Oregon v. Mitchell, 400 U.S. 112 (1970)). Today, the right to vote continues to be challenged through the passage of new laws and practices that either fail to consider, disregard, or intentionally target Native American voters.

"In order to understand the challenges faced by Native American voters, one must recognize the vast differences in experiences, opportunities, and realities facing on-reservation voters as compared to off-reservation voters.

"I will never forget the #Navajo grandmother who spoke only Navajo and could not vote after Arizona passed its voter ID law in 2004. She tried several times to obtain an Arizona ID on her own but was denied because she was born at home in a hogan, and the boarding schools changed her Navajo name to English. She lived in a modest home on the Navajo Reservation without electricity and running water, and lived a traditional lifestyle taking care of her sheep. She was embarrassed and devastated when she was turned away from the polls for not having an ID. Working with her, a team from the Indian Legal Clinic traveled five hours to meet her at multiple agency offices to obtain her delayed birth certificate; we then went to two separate Motor Vehicle Division Offices. The first one did not issue same-day photo IDs, and the other initially denied her request. The office rejected her delayed Navajo birth certificate, until I was able to intervene and demonstrate to them that it was an acceptable document. The system failed to consider her reality as a Navajo woman and failed to value her as a voter. Fortunately, she was persistent in exercising her right to vote, but not all voters are, nor should they have to be.

"This example helps explain why voting can be difficulty for Native American voters. Turnout for Native Americans is the lowest in the country, as compared to other groups. While a number of issues contribute to the low voter turnout, a study conducted by the Native American Voting Rights Coalition found that low levels of trust in government, lack of information on how and where to register and to vote, long travel distances to register or to vote, low levels of access to the internet, hostility toward Native Americans, and intimidation are obstacles. Isolating conditions such as language barriers, socioeconomic disparities, lack of access to transportation, lack of residential #addresses, lack of access to #mail, and the digital divide limit Native American political participation. Changes to voting processes further frustrate the ability of Native Americans to vote."

Sometimes I wonder if street names in VA make more sense to someone who grew up here, or if they are confusing because I grew up in UT, where it's grids all the way down. My two faves are Pleasant Valley Rd, which is actually two roads right next to each other at the county line, and US50, aka John S. Mosby Hwy, Little River Turnpike, Lee Jackson Memorial Hwy (and those are just the names near me). #Virginia #Utah #NOVA

A few things that caught my attention:

  • The governors do not define "far right" and "far left"
  • They give no breakdown of the ratio of right/left violent threats and actions
  • They have no awareness of a different kind of "perception gap" wherein voters support for the substance of more left-leaning policies doesn't always translate to votes due to decades of well-poisoning.

.@sltrib, I have enjoyed the #BehindTheHeadlines podcast for several years and was happy to hear it would still be on #Utah Public Radio.

However, when I went looking for the RSS feed, I found I would have to download #UPR's podcast app to listen.

I pay extra to not only subscribe but donate to the SL Tribune. I also donate to several independent podcasts via patreon.

What I won't do is download a new app to get access to a podcast. I didn't do it when #LPOTL went to Spotify. I didn't do it when #ColdPodcast went to Amazon music. I won't do it for you.

Still, I'd welcome the news you opened up access to the feed in the future.

For now, I bid you adieu.
