Apparently these minimal tab bars visionOS uses as its main navigation within apps only reveal their text labels when the user looks at them for a while. Compare this to the tab bar in iOS apps that shows both icons and text labels at all times.
I’m very curious to find out how this will impact the user experience. On macOS controls that only appear when hovered are pretty bad most of the time but maybe having your eyes be the cursor could make this much more effective? 🤔

🖧 Why did Usenet fail? | @Edent
⎧ User Experience matters. That's why Usenet lost. It was hard to set up, there was a ton of terminology to learn, sticky posts with group etiquette didn't exist, trolls and grieffers couldn't be moderated away, and the whole thing looked like a 1990s shareware accountancy package ⎭

All this shoe-horning #MLM #AIs into other products is going to create a #UX discoverability nightmare. Will be like playing 80s text adventure games, assuming because it's NLP you can ask anything, but knowing it's limited in reality, and can only really provide some unknown subset of functionality.

Probably a long shot, but any #UX people here have a great example of an app that does. great job of integrating a LOT of features that may not always fit together? If your app is struggling to be maintained with the bounds of a 5-tab navigation structure, what other navigation scheme would you turn to?

Since learning the trick of adding „ reddit“ to web searches to get better results, i have been intrigued by #reddit. But the website and app are an #UX nightmare, slow & confusing, unbearable. Enter #Apolloapp: An #iOS client that made browsing (& writing the occasional comment) really fun!
But Apollo is shutting down, because Reddit goes public so 3rd party clients (that don’t show its terrible ads) need to go. It’s the #Twitter playbook. And it means there’s one more social network i leave.

Our big takeaway from the #wwdc23 is that you really (in the name of the children, progress, and out of respect for your users) should start designing or redesigning your #apps for #3d as they would be literally coming out of the screens. Those who still truck around preaching that design/HCD is some kind of panacea for govt, please read this. It’s a perfect example of how design is not only not neutral on human rights by default (and therefore reinforces existing inequities and props up abuses) but is increasingly being directly weaponized against human rights and used to lower the political visibility and costs of abuses. What is it with Microsoft and adding random unnecessary buttons and visual clutter?
I don't want the News widget on my taskbar, I don't want new buttons popping up in my browser, and I don't want a notification badge showing on the Games app to tell me what new games are available.
By all means, alert me in some unobtrusive way that there's a new feature, but please get my consent before enabling it.

Change Mode UI doesn’t state current status. This adds cognitive load on the user to have to read what the status is and there is no confirmation if the fence or beacon is active or not.
Solution:
When opening Change Mode have current state active. If fence is active, keep button color blue. This allows the user to quickly see what is active and what is not.

One thing that was unfortunately missing from all of the amazing announcements at this year’s WWDC is the introduction of a standalone “Passwords” app.
I think putting this feature front and center instead of burying it in Settings could really help the user experience and improve discoverability.
I made a quick mockup in Sketch to illustrate that this could be achieved with surprisingly little work. Here’s hoping they do this soon! 🤞

“Many aspects of web design have become de facto standards. In other words, it may not be that there was ever a hard-and-fast rule about how something should be laid out/designed, but has come about through years of repetition. Breaking away from such trends only causes usability problems, whether the de facto standard is actually the best approach or not; it’s all about familiarity”
