I am a community gardener.

This year, someone chopped all the green off my grape vines, including the grapes, in August.

3 weeks ago, someone removed all of the plants in the gardens in our section. They also took all of the supports we had purchased and built.

I couldn’t write about it, when it happened.
What would motivate someone to do this?

My heart is heavy. Our neighbour gardener had built up their garden over years, plants that covered the ground and eliminated weeds.

I just tried and failed to get my 8yo kid into a doctor's office. And I want to talk about that.

I live in #Vancouver, #BC. #Canada. Many in the US see this as some kind of promised land, because there's a public health system. But it doesn't work.

It CAN work. I've also lived in Strasbourg, France. And in comparison, there my kid would have seen a pediatrician within hours of a call.

This failure is a POLICY CHOICE by authorities. Not some impossible social hurdle.

A friend of mine just sent me a link to this Vancouver-based company that makes baking mixes and barley flour with rescued grains from local craft breweries.

According to their website, they’ve used 12,500 kilograms of grain from 7 local breweries in their products so far – and aim to rescue 40,000 kilos more by the end of 2023.

I love to see businesses upcycling valuable resources like this!
