You know, Mastodon has the more obvious and reasonable verification system ever: just link back from the original site and BAM, verified. No need to pass through a council of bullshit led by some egocentric CEO to say that yes, this is my real account. In hindsight it's incredible how easy it was to give control of our own online existence for free, and how many people and companies willingly became hostages to these social network moguls.

While this does get you a checkmark, this does nothing to achieve true #verification on #mastodon as the point is for verification to prove you are who you say you are by proving ownership of your personal/professional site or blog.
Jason did mention it's mostly a joke site, but just for reference, it is this effective. It gets you a checkmark, but verifies nothing 👌(Can make it easier to impersonate)

OK, I'm trying to get "Verified" here on the woolly mammoth. However, when I do that, I get a mess of naked HTML code on my site. It MAY be related to the fact that my site is on WordPress, and the online editor is less than perfect. Still, I can't seem to figure out what's going on.
If anyone has any ideas here, I'm happy to listen. I can't believe I'm the only WordPress user who wants to verify themselves with Mastodon.

Here is a free to use idea that someone should capitalize on... Someone should develop an external site to host verifications for free and link peoples verified account to any social media site of theirs.
So a site like wub wub wub.weareverified . whatever will have people sign up, go through a rigorous verification process that can't be bought, and then post users verified account pages like an old school white pages (if anyone remembers those).
Then we can go there to search for our favorite personalities or influencers or companies...
Just an idea... if you do it just give me a credit somehow!

There should be an option to use a #DNS entry as an alternative as is typically done on other #Internet platforms, including #Apple and #Proton and #Google. While individuals may own domain names, for various reasons they may choose not to pay for website hosting. The current system disenfranchises these people. I think #verification on #Mastodon does a lot more than "literally nothing." It proves that the person writing these toots is the same person writing those blog articles on my website, and those code repositories on my #GitHub profile.
Now, the real question: Is that kind of verification actually valuable? For a relatively obscure guy like me, whose influence extends only as far as his own personal and professional networks, not extremely. But there's always a non-zero risk that someone out there will attempt to deceive someone I know by pretending to be me. I never want that to happen to anyone, especially those in my personal and professional networks, so I'm just doing what I can to establish a known baseline of my identity. #TrustButVerify

Yes, they are #centealized company, but they are joining the #fediverse and are in an excellent position to do verification.
Yes, they allow you to verify your #Mastodon account by linking it to your #Medium account with a URL, but they can also verification similar to #Twitter before it just became a pay-to-scam feature.
I actually like the idea. For example, let's say a #Youtube creator uses #Medium to post extra content, transcripts, or longer discussion articles. #Medium can then verify that it is indeed that Youtuber and also verify their #Mastodon account and identity.
Yes, they can verify their identity by linking the #Youtube channel by connecting it with a URL, but an automated #verified checkmark next to their profile name could be fun and useful.
Paying for #verification isn’t verification it just gives rich people more money (and no they’re still not your friend).
@damovisa the difference might be that they plan to do some verification, using Government issued ID, instead of just whacking a blue tick on a profile picture!
They'll also require the user profile picture to show the user's real face.
As I'm thinking about this, I have lots more questions about #verification done by #meta. Once the verification is done, what happens to that verification? Does Facebook all of a sudden lose your verification if you stop paying? That's sort of the problem with a monthly service like this.

1. change the link on your github profile to point to your mastodon account
2. poke your mastodon server to verify your links
3. change it back to whatever it was before.
Your #Mastodon #verification check won't go away. The mechanism just says "this person has proved they control this page they've linked to" not "the page being linked to currently links back to me"
I will point out, if @signalapp is actually associated with the Signal Messaging organization, it should be fairly straight forward to use #Mastodon #verification
I reached out to #SoundCloud about them masking the URLs added to profile pages. Annoyingly, they do add rel="me", but because of this behavior, you can't verify your SoundCloud URL on Mastodon.
