Picked up a nice, eclectic haul at Josey Records today, featuring a 1977 MFSB compilation, a reissue of Herbie Hancock’s classic 1971 fusion LP Mwandishi, Arlo Parks’ just-released My Soft Machine, and an unexpected find of a 2017 collection of Jean-Jacques Perry rarities.

A small vinyl shop a few towns away had a 1 year anniversary celebration yesterday so I picked a few new records. a bit more than I usually pay for a used single disc but the promised “Mint” sticker was no joke. Might as well opened this myself. What a fun record. Been listening to a bunch of Clash again so I’m appreciating this more than I did at the time.

This is Judas Priest's debut album. The sound has a blues and prog rock sound. This Coca-Cola knock-off logo cover was later changed for a more "heavy metal" one. I may get the other variant later on.
The album has very a tame sound but very enjoyable from a Heavy Metal history + Judas Priest fan perspective.

Always interesting to listen to this collection. I’m not a “greatest hits” person, and this isn’t that.
Rather, it’s a compilation illustrating aspects of the band from the first to the last (well, as of 1985), including EPs and singles.
I wouldn’t say “if you could only have one Bauhaus album, get this one”, but…
Splurged on the limited edition back in the day…although back then “limited” was far more than “300 copies”.

Actually, only 3 tracks were recorded live but what a masterpiece...

Today’s listening is ‘Smile’, the 2000 album by The Jayhawks.
In particular I’ve been listening to the 2014 vinyl reissue of this album.
On this record The Jayhawks mostly moved away from their more ‘folksy Americana’ style towards a heavier rock, almost pop, sound on many of the tracks.
For me, side 1 is stronger than side 2, with side 1 featuring some great tracks such as ‘Smile’ and ‘I’m Gonna Make You Love Me’.
Well worth a listen!

Supposedly a great band in history, so bought it for a few euros. Well, apart from Eight Miles High I think this is really boring.

OK, while it arrived the other day, it only qualified for a #NowPlaying this fine Sunday morning. I have to say, this Nagra anniversary record is quite good. Tracks from masters going all the way back to 1955 (Marlene Verplack, Deep in a Dream) to 2021 (drum sound check by Matthieu Latour). A great listen, but also a great reference recording. #vinyl #jazz

John Scofield - Still Warm
I’m not quite sure why this early Scofield album, made soon after he left Miles’ group, isn’t well regarded as many of his others. Maybe it’s because it’s a bit more fusion and bit less funky? Maybe it’s because he sounds a little more Methenyish on some tracks?
Well, I’m sure I’m going to find some Scofield album I don’t like…but this isn’t it.
(The quartet also includes Omar Hakim and Darryl Jones, who also worked with Davis and…Sting.)

Thomas Dolby - The Golden Age of Wireless
Although most remember She Blinded Me with Science, I remember buying this because of Europa and the Pirate Twins…and because XTC’s Andy Partridge was involved.
Little did I know it’d end up being chockablock with supporting talent, from Mute’s Daniel Miller to Lene Lovich. Not to mention main producer Tim Friese-Greene of Talk Talk (who also produced the Catherine Wheel’s best albums).

Steely Dan - Gaucho
Steely Dan’s first run ended here, in 1980, with a record fraught with difficulties, including Becker being hit by a car, and one has to assume running out of coke after snorting the whole state of California.
Listening, though, you can’t tell. Has there ever been a better recorded and produced “rock” record? (You know when you book Mark Knopfler for a long session and use only a few magnificent bars, you might have set the bar kinda high.)
The White Stripes - Elephant XX
This special “vault” edition of Elephant presents the LP (one red, one white, of course) in a nice book full of pictures, memorabilia, an extra 7”, etc.
The music is well known enough that there’s not much I can say - it’s a pretty amazing tour-de-force of punk-influenced blues and craziness.
The actual pressing is—as you’d expect, given Jack owns Third Man Pressing—fantastic.

Sleaford Mods - UK Grim
The thing that makes Jason Williamson's aggressively downbeat rants endurable is the obvious fact that he wouldn't bother if he didn't think there was hope.
Basically, a continuation of Spare Ribs, a bit darker, a bit angrier.
Billy Nomates is missed this time around, but it's nice to hear Dry Cleaning's Florence Shaw in the mix.
Wynton Kelly Trip feat. Wes Montgomery - Smokin' at the Half Note
A bit ironic that only about half of this was actually recorded at the Half Note, and the rest at Rudy Van Gelder's studio, but regardless, what a great record.

R.E.M. - Chronic Town (EP)
It’s hard to overstate how appealing the Radio Free Europe single was back in 1981, at least to those of us listening to “college radio”.
Then this EP hit, following up on that promise–five more tracks, all great. I played the heck out of my original (still have it)…but this is the recent picture disc, just because.
Did I like Carnival of Sorts (Boxcars) more than Radio Free Europe? I *still* can’t decide.
