My review of A Midsummer Day's Resonance, the 2005 translation of a 2002 freeware Japanese visual novel. I reviewed it as part of a project to review nearly 30 translations from 2005-2008. A Midsummer Day's Resonance, which is a story about growing up with holograms coming from phones, turned out to be one of the better reads thus far.

Absolutely satisfying feeling I had today? Getting the NVIDIA drivers to run with CUDA, VA and Hardware Rendering on #ZorinOS with KDE as DE. Which also allowed #visualnovels to run without the initial warning that only software rendering is used and made them super enjoyable like I'm used from #Windows

It's still a tough challenge for me to stick to it and learn all the new stuff and not throwing the towel and just go back. But also, #unity and #blender installed and with working GPU rendering. Absolutely satisfying!

Next up: IDEs and DevTools

Let it be said that Midsummer Haze's... interesting... random mechanic was not my only challenge. The EN translation is a patch for an indie Japanese VN from 2004 that went offline in 2008 or 09. In a separate post, I explained how I managed to find the original Japanese game... much searching and a lucky torrent.

The game has four endings, and the third unlocks the fourth. How do you get the third? By re-doing the second until it triggers. How many times did that take me? FORTY-THREE

Yeah, aside from #GOG being probably the most prominent #DRMfree #videogame store, there's #itch.io (#itchio), which I think is mostly DRM-free. The only #DRM I've seen on itch has been devs selling #Steam keys (usually alongside but sometimes without standalone installers/archives).

Other stores include: #HumbleStore and #GamersGate, where DRM-free products are clearly marked as such. GamersGate is less likely but can be worth the extra click to check if you're already looking up a game on IsThereAnyDeal.

There's also #DLsite (for mostly Japanese games), which from my experience seems to be DRM-free unless otherwise indicated, though products with DRM on DLsite are a lot more common than on itch. (Also be aware that some products have English and Japanese versions or Windows and Mac versions sold separately.)

For #VisualNovels, #JAST (a.k.a. #JASTUSA) and #MangaGamer (NSFW warning for these sites, as you might expect) are both DRM-free.

Sometimes you can find publishers that offer DRM-free stuff on their own web stores. #FruitbatFactory does, for example. (I think Sekai Project and NekoNyanSoft also do but I've never used them before.)

As I understand, #BOOTH.pm (#BoothPM), #FireFlowerGames, #GameJolt and #ZOOMPlatform (the game store, not to be confused with the videoconferencing thing) also sell games DRM-free, but I've never yet used them.

FYI some of these aren't on IsThereAnyDeal (which already seems to have enough trouble sorting the large numbers of itch and Steam games). But there aren't that many to check. The biggest store that's missing is DLsite, I think?

(Sadly, the #Desura and #Playism game stores no longer exist.)

I cannot recommend this game enough if you like story heavy games / visual novels and dungeon-crawler RPGs (or at least, if you don't mind DRPGs). The only real caveat is that it deserves a lot of content warnings (it earns that M rating); it's a >100-hour long wild ride that I would put in the same league as The House in Fata Morgana or NieR Automata.

This is pretty exciting! The original White Album was one of the earliest titles by Leaf, the developer who literally coined the term "visual novel", and this is the first time it's been released in English. It was originally a 1998 PC game that got a remake for the PS3 in 2010, and this is a port of the PS3 version back to PC. Although its successor, White Album 2, is somewhat more famous for being a smash hit and one of the most popular VNs of all time, the original is still a super important piece of history, and you should check it out!

Any recs? I'm looking for the landmarks of the genre, but also the quirky and experimental.

I realize I have not made an introduction yet, which is my fault... considering I've gone for about... I think half a month? without introducing myself to this place.

Hi. I'm b063. I have a wide range of interests, including #drawing, #writing, #roleplaying, listening to music, and #worldbuilding, along with playing games such as (primarily modded) #Minecraft, #Roblox, and an unfathomable amount of #VisualNovels.

My current (as of writing this) focus is Obelisk of Dream Recall (or OoDR for short), a nearly impossible, checkpointless, and inhumanely long obby on Roblox.

Follow me if you do any similar stuff, I guess. I'm not really social towards others unless they socialize with me first, and I admit am kind of an introvert.

Only note on running that I encountered when I first tested it a few months ago is that it wants MIDI for sound. On EndeavourOS that meant setting up Fluidsynth and loading some ALSA kernel modules, but your mileage may vary.

For those who are interested, it can be downloaded and played for free from the official source. It is a bit finicky to run. It requires a Japanese language environment. It also needs Japanese fonts or things won't display correctly (the default fonts I installed from the AUR did not work well here). I ran it on top of WINE without any problems after the initial configuration. Unlike most of the al|together translations, there is no native Linux version (this one was written in KiriKiri instead of ONScripter-EN).
