Intense paroxysms at Anak Krakatau volcano, Indonesia
The Anak Krakatau #volcano, located in Indonesia's Sunda Strait, has resumed its explosive activity, exhibiting a series of short-lived lava-fountaining episodes known as paroxysms last night. The eruptions lasted up to 150 seconds while ash was reaching 2 100 m (7 000 feet) above sea level.
Death toll rises to 23 after sudden eruption at Marapi volcano, Indonesia
A major eruption at Mount Marapi in Indonesia on Sunday, December 3, 2023, has led to a confirmed death toll of 23. Rescuers, facing challenging conditions, found additional bodies near the eruption site. The #volcano, remaining on high alert since 2011, unexpectedly erupted, impacting climbers and nearby villagers.

we'll see what happens with the volcano...
While many eruptions can be predicted based on specific types of earthquakes and gas emissions, sometimes magma and underground water reservoirs meet, which makes the water flash to steam and causes an explosion, which triggers an eruption. These are called #phreatic eruptions, and they just flat-out cannot be predicted. :(
From the American Geophysical Union via Phys.org: "Despite the potential for danger, scientists have only scant data regarding where magma is stored beneath the Cascades, knowledge that could help scientists better understand and predict future eruptions, Penny E. Wieser and colleagues report in a recent review published in Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems." That includes Mt Adams, Baker, Glacier Peak and Hood.
How #eruption of the Tonga Hunga #volcano produced the most intense lightning ever seen: “The interaction between the volcanic ash, [vaporised sea-]water molecules and particles of ice in the plume – which formed as water droplets were supercooled in the high atmosphere – built up large electrical charges, producing the perfect conditions for lightning” - a peak rate of 2600 flashes a minute! https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20230713-how-the-tonga-hunga-volcano-produced-the-most-intense-lightning-ever-seen

Short update - Mt Etna, Sicily
On 1 December, a new paroxysm occurred at the South East Crater complex of Mount Etna. This began in the late afternoon with an intensification of the stromoblian activity that had been ongoing for around 14 days. This soon turned into the emission of lava fountains up to 400 metres high. The eruption column was driven in a north-easterly direction and caused ash rain down as far as the coast in the Giardini/Naxos area. Lava flows poured through the southern breach of the cone to the west/south-west and through the eastern breach in the direction of Valle del Bove. The explosive activity ceased in the late evening, but lava was still produced for a few hours.
This INGV webcam photo shows the paroxysm at the South East Crater from south eastern direction:

You may have seen how volcano eruptions are depicted in cartoons, with red-hot lava shooting straight up in the sky before cascading down the slopes of the mountain. It’s called volcanic fountaining, and it does occur in real life, as the 2021 eruption of Fagradalsfjall in Iceland displayed. A team of Earth scientists, meteorologists, geologists and volcanologists might have found the answer to why this happens. Phys.org explains: https://flip.it/3yZCSA

In Iceland, an imminent volcanic eruption is causing concern about the economy.
Earthquakes have already caused major damage in the town of Grindavik, in southwest Iceland. Between inflation and air transport chaos, previous disasters have taken their toll on life on the island.
The NHK is reporting that a substantial volcanic eruption happened in Papua New Guinea happened earlier today. Where is #volcano Mastodon, I need more details! https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20231120_29/
For #FotoMontag and even #MountainsMonday since I saw that passing through the timeline earlier, this is Mount Teide on Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Not only is it the highest point of any island in the Atlantic, it's also Spain's highest mountain, and is also a volcano.
If You Can't Take The Heat...
While we wait for the imminent #Iceland eruption, here's a shot from 2014 when Bárðarbunga popped off in Holuhraun. We flew from #Akureyri, down across the Highlands until we reached Vatnajökull glacier, then our twin engine Piper Otter flew figure 8s around the vent for about 40 minutes.
If you look closely, there's a helicopter for scale.
Apologies for the poor quality, this is a frame of video.

When I read stories about the Reykjanes peninsula shifting back into an active volcanic phase after ~800 years of quiescence, I always think about how *much* of #Iceland's population lives on or near the Reykjanes Peninsula.
Iceland #volcano could burst like a 'fizzy drink,' with lava reaching Blue Lagoon resort in days
‘I felt like I was in a dystopian novel’: residents are unsure they’ll ever return to volcano-threatened Icelandic town

They are keenly interested in the recent Iceland volcanic activity (probably won’t impact climate):
They also heard about warming* and Hunga Tonga:
Through my mind, I am recalling this blog by my boss: https://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2016/04/the-volcano-gambit/
But with a bit of circumspection and sense of responsibility, I said 'okay’.

Iceland's imminent volcanic eruption could be the 'start of centuries of eruptions'
We need to get back to normal and learn to live with endemic magma
I think this is becoming a bit of trend (volcanic activity, not me posting about it):
And then there was this:
There's a lot of volcanic activity happening around the globe at the moment. The geologist in me is really excited (sad sod!)
Iceland earthquake: Town evacuated fearing volcanic eruption
According to geology professor Shawn Willsey, in Grindavik today, they detected SO2 - a volcanic gas.
It doesn’t mean the eruption’s imminent, especially since the most violent of the magma intrusive processes (e.g., the earthquakes and ground cracks) along the dike have subsided, so it’s not pushing upward so forcefully. But at this point, it is believed that the magma’s maybe 1/2-mile beneath the surface.

Well, some good news from #iceland. They seem to be good at evacuation.
"It is believed that all animals have been rescued."
Somebody even had turkeys. Also 🐏 .
Best wishes to the residents, sorry about the #volcano having the last word on this.

Latest IMO (#Iceland Met Office) estimate of rising underground magma dike line where new #volcano🌋 fissure eruption is likely. Though near 2021-2023 #Fagradalsfjall eruptions, this is in #Reykjanes volcanic region, also on mid-Atlantic Ridge. https://en.vedur.is/about-imo/news/a-seismic-swarm-started-north-of-grindavik-last-night #geology
Pictures by #Iceland @RUVEnglish / @RUVohf of cracks in the golf course as shallow quakes cause damage across Grindavik and threaten a new #volcano🌋fissure eruption. The evacuation of Grindavik last night went very well. A magma tunnel has formed under the town. These typically erupt at one or more spots along the tunnel. The timeline could be in hours or days.
Quakes have already caused geological markers to move apart by 1 m or more. Significant damage to roads and buildings.
This video from @ mondoterremoti on Twitter reportedly shows the impact of a magma intrusion pulsing through the ground below the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland where an eruption is now imminent. Based on this footage I'd have long packed my bags and left - the sound is absolutely terrifying.
👉🏾 Iceland declares state of emergency, evacuates residents over threat of volcanic eruption https://www.cnn.com/2023/11/11/europe/iceland-emergency-evacuates-threat-volcanic-eruption-intl-hnk/index.html
A lava tunnel now seems to stretch underneath the fishing town of Grindavik and earthquake activity concentrated underneath it (orange spot on lower end of image).
The town was fully evacuated during the night.
This is starting to feel uncomfortably like that Tommy Lee Jones movie Volcano from 1997.
If you've ever been to Iceland, you probably flew into Keflavik; and so, you probably drove through the very dramatic 'bad lava' landscape of Reykjanes. That landscape is dramatically on the move again; the town of Grindavik is being evacuated.
😞 One of the roads between #Reykjavik and #Keflavik International Airport has been damaged badly by the seismic activity, so traffic’s being redirected onto side roads. If you’re catching a flight out of #KEF, give yourself a lot of time to get to the airport.
(Source: reputable geologists’ Twitter accounts.)
Iceland is amazing. It exists as a result of a #FloodBasalt (a place where a bunch of magma emerges and spreads out) caused by the diverging tectonic plates at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Not necessarily in a fully quiescent way, but not in the same explosive nature as subduction-zone stratovolcanoes.
I haven’t been there but it’s at the top of my wishlist. It’s #volcano heaven…except when it threatens people’s livelihoods like this.
