Intense paroxysms at Anak Krakatau volcano, Indonesia

The Anak Krakatau #volcano, located in Indonesia's Sunda Strait, has resumed its explosive activity, exhibiting a series of short-lived lava-fountaining episodes known as paroxysms last night. The eruptions lasted up to 150 seconds while ash was reaching 2 100 m (7 000 feet) above sea level.

Death toll rises to 23 after sudden eruption at Marapi volcano, Indonesia

A major eruption at Mount Marapi in Indonesia on Sunday, December 3, 2023, has led to a confirmed death toll of 23. Rescuers, facing challenging conditions, found additional bodies near the eruption site. The #volcano, remaining on high alert since 2011, unexpectedly erupted, impacting climbers and nearby villagers.

#Marapi #volcano: damn. :( Deep condolences to the people who died in today’s unexpected eruption (its largest in its history, according to #GeologyHub).

While many eruptions can be predicted based on specific types of earthquakes and gas emissions, sometimes magma and underground water reservoirs meet, which makes the water flash to steam and causes an explosion, which triggers an eruption. These are called #phreatic eruptions, and they just flat-out cannot be predicted. :(

From the American Geophysical Union via Phys.org: "Despite the potential for danger, scientists have only scant data regarding where magma is stored beneath the Cascades, knowledge that could help scientists better understand and predict future eruptions, Penny E. Wieser and colleagues report in a recent review published in Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems." That includes Mt Adams, Baker, Glacier Peak and Hood.

Short update - Mt Etna, Sicily

On 1 December, a new paroxysm occurred at the South East Crater complex of Mount Etna. This began in the late afternoon with an intensification of the stromoblian activity that had been ongoing for around 14 days. This soon turned into the emission of lava fountains up to 400 metres high. The eruption column was driven in a north-easterly direction and caused ash rain down as far as the coast in the Giardini/Naxos area. Lava flows poured through the southern breach of the cone to the west/south-west and through the eastern breach in the direction of Valle del Bove. The explosive activity ceased in the late evening, but lava was still produced for a few hours.

This INGV webcam photo shows the paroxysm at the South East Crater from south eastern direction:

Webcam photo was taken during the peak of the paroxysmal episode. In the centre you can see the approx. 400 m high lava fountains. The lava flow through the southern breach is to the left below. Part of the front of the lava flow can be seen to the left below it. This extends in a west/south-west direction. On the right, the lava flow pouring through the eastern breach in the direction of Valle del Bove.

You may have seen how volcano eruptions are depicted in cartoons, with red-hot lava shooting straight up in the sky before cascading down the slopes of the mountain. It’s called volcanic fountaining, and it does occur in real life, as the 2021 eruption of Fagradalsfjall in Iceland displayed. A team of Earth scientists, meteorologists, geologists and volcanologists might have found the answer to why this happens. Phys.org explains: https://flip.it/3yZCSA

My brief visit to #CostaRica, my mother's birthplace, almost 30 years ago, was at the start of the #ecotourism trend described in this article, and was nothing at all like the author's experience.

We stayed in #SanJose, but I did visit the #CloudForest (and a river tour and my then third #volcano, #Arenal). It is a beautiful country.

The #ferns especially struck me as #primeval; I imagined dinosaurs eating or wading through them, they were so massive.

For #FotoMontag and even #MountainsMonday since I saw that passing through the timeline earlier, this is Mount Teide on Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Not only is it the highest point of any island in the Atlantic, it's also Spain's highest mountain, and is also a volcano.

#MountTeide #Teide #Mountain #PhotoMonday #Travel #Photography #TravelPhotography #Volcano #Tenerife #Spain #CanaryIslands #Landscape #LandscapePhotography

A portrait view of a cloudless day and a mountain, rising to a jagged, twin-peaked top towards the top right of view. This is a warm climate, with the mountain's colours shades of beige or brown or pale red or yellow. A deep ridge in the centre of the mountain's side looks to have been formed from water running off a glacial top but the ice is really dry soil, almost sand. Small pieces of vegetation grow on the lower parts of the mountains, dotting the landscape with dark green, but a significant portion of the top of the natural feature has dark soil, bordering on black, which hints at the volcanic origins of it.

If You Can't Take The Heat...

While we wait for the imminent #Iceland eruption, here's a shot from 2014 when Bárðarbunga popped off in Holuhraun. We flew from #Akureyri, down across the Highlands until we reached Vatnajökull glacier, then our twin engine Piper Otter flew figure 8s around the vent for about 40 minutes.
If you look closely, there's a helicopter for scale.

Apologies for the poor quality, this is a frame of video.

@photography #volcano #eruption

Please read the ALT tag for more.

A landscape of dark rock with a volcanic eruption fissure diagonally across from centre left to centre right. Bright yellow, orange and red lava is shooting upwards to a great height, approximately 50 metres (164 feet) above the the cone it has built for itself. The main vent - named Baugur - is about 400 metres (1312 feet) long, and rivulets of lava are leading away from the main crater towards the right side of the photo. There's another smaller vent, named Krakki literally "the kid", in the bottom centre of the shot which resembles a chimney. The inside is glowing with heat and another channel of lava is running away from it towards the left of the frame. Hanging above the lava streaming from the main vent is a helicopter, resembling a delicate dragonfly in comparison. Both vents are belching steam and gas, the clouds of it are a noxious yellowy grey.

According to geology professor Shawn Willsey, in Grindavik today, they detected SO2 - a volcanic gas.

It doesn’t mean the eruption’s imminent, especially since the most violent of the magma intrusive processes (e.g., the earthquakes and ground cracks) along the dike have subsided, so it’s not pushing upward so forcefully. But at this point, it is believed that the magma’s maybe 1/2-mile beneath the surface.

Iceland is amazing. It exists as a result of a #FloodBasalt (a place where a bunch of magma emerges and spreads out) caused by the diverging tectonic plates at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Not necessarily in a fully quiescent way, but not in the same explosive nature as subduction-zone stratovolcanoes.

I haven’t been there but it’s at the top of my wishlist. It’s #volcano heaven…except when it threatens people’s livelihoods like this.
