**UBUNTU LINUX 23.10 WITH TABLET IS B0RKED**

This is just an informational post.

The Gnome 45 release shipped with Ubuntu 23.10 can't handle tablet input. So, if you use creative tools like Inkscape, Krita, GIMP, or Blender Grease pencil with a tablet for pen input, you'll want to hold off on that upgrade.

#Wacom is so super weird.

Their #drivers gone from "It just works" for until 2 or 3 years ago to "it might work as suspected" after a couple of reboots. But the problems are on Mac and PC the same, yeah!

Any recommendations for non-#Wacom drawing tablets?

With a little searching, it looks like #Huion or #XPPen are the most commonly mentioned competitors. Any thoughts, pro or con?

Background: I'm not actually any good at drawing, but I've been using Wacom #Intuos pen tablets for years as my primary "mouse". I find a pen tablet much more comfortable than a mouse, and though I don't draw, photo editing is much easier with a pen tablet. (Pen tablet only, no built-in screen necessary.)

However, while Wacom's hardware is good, their macOS driver support has been and continues to be _atrocious_. It is always weeks after a new macOS release comes out before their drivers are declared ready, and even once they are, they're invariably buggy and problematic. I waited for nearly a month after macOS #Sonoma was released to upgrade because I was waiting for Wacom to indicate their driver was ready; now that I've updated, their driver is crashing multiple times a day, generally requiring a reboot to get going again, and even when it works, for some reason using shift or the command key to select multiple items doesn't work if I'm using the Intuos (but does if I use an Apple trackpad for the mousing-and-clicking part of the operation).

I'm tired of fighting with Wacom. But I know nothing about the competitors, and I wonder about going from a ~$300 input device to a ~$70 input device. I don't expect it to be quite at Wacom's level, but I also don't want to end up with something that's even more frustrating than what I'm dealing with now.

Any recommendations, thoughts, suggestions, or personal experience to draw upon?

The pcb is a prototype / proof of concept for a wacom compatible drawing tablet.

This is the first time I designed a pcb with this many 0 ohm resistors, do not place parts, test points, etc...

A screenshot of the kicad 3d viewer. The screenshot shows a square pcb with a matrix of pcb coils. To the left of this there is a bunch of analog signal processing, to the top and in random other places, there is a bunch more supporting circuitry.

The circuit has a bunch of single pin pin headers used as test points for testing.

A schematic drawing of the analog input filtering circuit. There are 5 opamps surrounded by a bunch of passives to process the signal. A bunch of the passives are marked do not place (and have a big X through them), there are two jumpers to be able to take an alternative path with the signal, and there are a bunch of testpoints throughout this circuit.

The top level schematic for the pcb. There are a bunch of subcircuits visible. The microcontroller, two analog multiplexer chips, an optional ADC, a negative voltage generator, and three transmitter signal generators (in parallel).

Upgrading to #GoodNotes version 6 needs an additional payment, even though I've already purchased version 5. Therefore, the once claimed permanent software license is only valid for a single version, not the whole software life time. Meanwhile, CamScanner Pro for scanning documents which I purchased years ago cannot run on recent #iPad OS anymore.

Considering building up a digital knowledge and information database which can last in a stable format at least for my whole life time, I find it mandatory to discard these seemingly well commercially supported and user friendly software tools and platform. Instead, I will switch to more fundamental and general hardware and software. For writing with a pen directly on a digital device, I've abandoned iPad + Apple Pencil and started to use #Wacom tablet. The following photo shows my Wacom Intuos 4100 tablet that was purchased on 2023-09-17.

New one for me #wacom #apple #ventura You can't simply install Wacom tablet drivers on Ventura. The Apple’s setting will have a fit and get you to allow permissions in settings. But they are already on. To get them to work, you have to delete them from the list!
They’ll ask to get back in and then they’ll work.

East- #Asian techies, is there a #Linux / #GNOME / #Wayland compatible character recognition input method system that would allow someone to use a #Wacom tablet or touchscreen-capable laptop (or some Linux-compatible device) to write traditional #Chinese "as if writing on paper"?

#Cantonese mom has been stuck on Android for the past 8 years because learning phonetics-based / shape-based keyboard IMs on a computer seems way too complex.

I loaded Linux (GalliumOS) and Krita 4.3.0 onto an Acer C720 Chromebook and hooked up a Wacom and monitor for drawing! This thing's got a bigger screen than the iPad Pro! 😉

It's pretty barebones with 2GB RAM, but since I have to spend so much time in the kitchen, I hope this lets me grab a few spare minutes once in a while to practice drawing more (especially studies) 😀

Me regalaron una tableta #Wacom y vine a presumirles escribiendo este mensaje a mano con #CellWriter, un excelente #SoftwareLibre que reconoce trazos y los transforma en texto.

Me recordó la lejana época en la que también usaba esa función para escribir en mi #PocketPC 🥹

En la captura, también se ve #Xournal++, otro software libre genial para sacarle provecho a estos dispositivos.

Captura de pantalla: escritorio GNU/Linux con KDE Plasma, se ve una ventana de Firefox con el sitio de MaSToDoN.MX y el cuadro de redacción con el mensaje de este Toot listo para enviarse.

Encima se ve una pequeña ventana que corresponde al programa CellWriter, consiste en una rejilla que reconoce trazos y los convierte a caracteres.

A un lado, hay un ventaja del software Xournal++, enfocado sacar el mejor provecho de las características de este tipo de dispositivos. El contenido es una hoja de notas a rayas azules, con el siguiente mensaje escrito en letra cursiva:

"Las cosas no son como son
Son como somos"

Se resaltan: con marcador rojo la palabra "no", con verde la última palabra "Son" y con amarillo la palabra "somos".

Also there are sadly no new #ModBook|s on the market and carrying around another #Wacom tablet on top of a #MacBook is even bulkier than the biggest #iPadPro...
