S. Washington PCT Backpacking: Wrap
Here’s a few more photos from my trip. Table Mountain was amazing. Took damage to 4 pieces of gear and have multiple bruises from slipping on the rock field but it was a fun trip. Washington State is beautiful.

Yep here's a pic. Walking the tractor wheel ruts down this green corridor is exciting for him, all those scents and he loves finding whats around the corners.

I went on a mini-hike today with an old friend from uni, along part of the #Ridgeway, walking North from Swyncombe Church. It was glorious! The church was lovely, too, but I didn’t snap any photos inside. #hiking #walking #TheRidgeway #oxfordshire #england #countryside #nature

My labrador loves walking the tractor wheel ruts in this field. Can do a big circuit around the wheel ruts. No crop there, so not walking anything down. He likes being in the field, in this green corridor, yet stays on the wheel paths. #walking #nature #photo

It's powered by a Google Sheet, which you can contribute to with a simple Google Form: https://forms.gle/3FFGD5Jk14wUS22n6
Please have a look and if you're interested, contribute some measurements! I'll add more detailed instructions in the coming days.

Today, I used an old fly rod - Scott SES 9’ 5wt - it is heavier than the today’s standard 😉
Every time I use this fly rod, I am convinced that I don’t need to buy a new rod - this rod is smooth and makes me smile 😊

Thanks, especially, to @walkhighlands, for their public online repository of maps and guides for walks across Scotland. They make it *so* easy to find your way around and get out and about, whether for a short day walk or a longer adventure.

Day 4 was time to get off the #beach and the #LostCoastTrail. I headed up Rattlesnake Ridge into the #KingRange for camp by a high spring nearly at the top. https://valhikes.blogspot.com/2023/05/lost-coast-rattlesnake-ridge.html

1/ “How parking explains the world”
Interesting conversation that starts out relatively pro-car and then gets into the consequences of building pro-car cities.

#Urbanism #Parking #Cycling #Walking #Walkability
Random notes:
* Some of the most beloved parts of cities were built around 1900. This way of building is now illegal in the USA – partly due to parking requirements.
How do we break the cycle in which a perceived parking shortage requires us to make cities awful?
Ruin cities for #cycling, #walking, affordable #housing, attractive design and less #traffic.

It's been a strange weekend. Went to the markets with Kid4, then managed to sprain my ankle on the way home from the bus stop (Adam brought Jarrah, who was super excited and pulled me over while I was walking on some loose gravel). Super painful yesterday but a lot better today.
Now it's a grey Sunday and I've been out of sorts all day. I need to write but not feeling inspired. Currently drinking a ginger and lemon tea in the hopes I'll pull myself out of my doldrums.
went walking _again_ with friends on saturday. it was beautiful weather.
so much fun :D

This #LakeDistrict walk should be quieter than some of the better known routes during busy #BankHoliday times. It progresses from Great Dodd to Clough Head providing great views along the way. Details at https://tinyurl.com/2t4apxak

Have you ever been to a ship graveyard? ⛴️
Last Friday I walked to Purton Ships Graveyard on the River Severn, where old vessels have been deliberately beached and allowed to silt up, to help fight shore erosion.

S. Washington PCT Backpacking: Day 1
Made it out on the trail at sunrise. Little bit of a green tunnel so far but just hit this view of Gillette Lake and Table Mountain. So happy to be out in nature. There is something so freeing about living off of only the possessions you have in your backpack.
#Backpacking #PNW #Oregon #Photography #Hiking #Walking #Nature #Outdoors

I wanted to get some bulky items -- potting mix and chook food, which would be difficult to get without a car.
So I asked Dad if I could borrow his, and I picked it up last night and he came and collected it this afternoon. In the time I drove it (less than 24 hours) I got pulled over for RBT (random drug and alcohol testing) THREE TIMES 😂
That doesn't happen when you're walking and riding the bus!!
But I got the things I needed and sorted out a delivery in a month for chook food so I don't have to bother with that for a while.
Being carfree is otherwise going swimmingly...

Social media makes it easy to see how #motonormotivity affects the way people talk about safety. A new driver asked for tips on driving downtown. Pedestrians were the primary topic. The blame-shifting between “pedestrians have right of way but they don't wait for traffic to clear” and “go slow and wait for any pedestrians in the crosswalks" is clear. It is the responsibility of the less vulnerable to watch out for the more vulnerable.
The bluebells are out at Emsworthy Mire, a little bit earlier than usual (although later than other bluebells down this way) & well…quite spectacular!
I also spotted a cuckoo, a common redstart & a red kite! Happy girl.

Shortcut during fieldwork across the interior dunes, lunch in a calm hollow. Sand cherry everywhere in bloom, yellow warbler calling from pin cherry, towhee, other sparrows. Shortcut ends up being longer and more arduous.

Hiked up Elk Mountain this morning to do a loop hike, returning on the Elk Creek trail. The Elk Mountain trail climbs straight up the mountain, ascending 2000 feet of elevation in the first 1.5 miles. The summit was in a cloud so no views at the top. Still enjoyed it. Was passed by a trail runner who I saw yesterday in the gorge.

Splendid walk today - 5 miles from Over Haddon, down and along Lathkill Dale, around to Youlgreave for lunch, then back over the hill to Over Haddon. #walking #peakDistrict #landscapePhotography #photography

Day two at the Winchcombe Walkers are Welcome festival in the Cotswolds. Todays theme was flora and we spotted Green Winged Orchids as well as stunning bluebell woods. #WalkersAreWelcome #Snowshill #Winchcombe #Cotswolds #Orchid #Flora #Walking #Hiking #Architecture

I get to the bottom of the track and I've a choice to carry on to the road or take a chance skirting the lower edge of Allerford Woods. I decide to chance it as I think it likely the path to the lower edge would be better walked and more consistent with the map
A short way in I come across this delightful hut that looks out over the fields.
Pit stop two. Twix time.

I thought I might come out by Allerford, but I actually find Holnicote Combe and the wider track that descends it. This is much more pleasant. Lots of dramatic ferns. I love how they pick out the light in their throngs.
I briefly consider carrying on to Bury Castle, but I've spent way too long in the woods so I head down the hill

I reach Allerford Woods, marked as a plantation on the OS.
I have a vague plan to head straight down towards a well, St Agnes Fountain.
That does not happen. This wood and me are not friends. For a start there are a million paths, all seemingly unused and none that match the OS. Its impossible.
It also feels weird. It's doesn't feel rich like a native woodland. Feels like I'm just walking through an unloved garden.
There's also this weird giant memorial cross.

Because I'm me, I choose not to rejoin the SWC path, but to cross it and follow a track along the hillside towards a carpark at the hilltop.
I am rewarded by a Tree Pipit and offspring. 2 fledglings hopping down the path close ahead of me. And an adult eyeing me from the gorse.
Even though I'm not on the hill top, the view over the bay is still stunning and I am utterly alone.

As we round the headland looking over Selworthy Sand, the wind coming in from the east hits.
The path is a bit more perilous here, petering out in places, and I notice the few walkers who also ventured to the point from the SWC path, don't carry on round with me.
The edges are strewn with gorgeous thrift and sea campion.
Sea campion is also known as Dead Mans Bells and Witches Thimbles... seeing it grow close to the cliff edge I can kinda guess why.
I cross over the SWC path, as that carries on straight up Hurlstone Combe to the top of the hill, but I want to check out Hurlstone Point.
Banging name by the way. Like some 12 yr old lad named it.
As we near the point a flock of Goldfinches dash up and down the path and a wren tells me boldly to piss off from a gorse bush.
#walk #walking #hike
And I'm through the trees!
On a path that runs higher and parallel to the SWC path. Get ready for lots of sea view content because every part of this route round the hill was a gem!
There are lots of insects, butterflies, bees. Loads of these little moths, Yellow Speckled, and I noticed the wood sage they like to live near.
I start at the National Trust car park at Bossington, which is fairly busy so, me being me, I buck trend and rather than follow the ACTUAL South West Coast path, which skirts the lower edge of the hill, I take a path straight up, that will hopefully break the tree line sooner.
The Horner fords the footpath near the start of the route here. The lane is quite and the trees are doing wonderful things with the sunlight.
My fav Cuckoo's pint is starting to ripen.
#walk #walking #hike
Made it up to the viewpoint on Larch Mountain for this first time this year. The ascent was just over 4000 feet if elevation over 7 miles and 3 hours. While the snow cooperated, the clouds unfortunately did not. I saw the tip of Mount Hood poking out of the clouds and could barely make out St Helens in the distance. The rest were hiding. The snow has mostly melted with some snow fields above 3500 feet.

Eagle Creek Trail Backpacking: Day 2
Hiked south from Wy’East Camp to check out the more impressive waterfalls. Tunnel Falls came first and is probably the most popular on this trail, and for good reason, it’s amazing. Just past there is Twister Falls, which is my favorite. The twist looks better and more defined when the water is rushing less. Once past the waterfall corridor, the trees are very burnt in areas.

Phytoncides - the chemicals emitted by trees that protect them against germs & parasites, but which also benefit our nervous systems/immune response/mood.
Grateful for a lunchtime walk along this leafy lane - the mood uplift from fresh greens, the contrast between the first warmth of spring & the cool of the shadows, the body & mind resetting a bit after a morning in front of a screen.
