S. Washington PCT Backpacking: Wrap

Here’s a few more photos from my trip. Table Mountain was amazing. Took damage to 4 pieces of gear and have multiple bruises from slipping on the rock field but it was a fun trip. Washington State is beautiful.

Rocky section of the Pacific Crest Trail in Washington State. The trail goes through a rocky slope with green trees and a small mountain in the distance.

Selfie of me on Table Mountain with Mount Saint Helens on the left side behind me and Mount Adams on the right. Mount Saint Helens erupted in 1980 so the top of the mountain is gone.

Yep here's a pic. Walking the tractor wheel ruts down this green corridor is exciting for him, all those scents and he loves finding whats around the corners.

A golden labrador looking happy and excited, his lead tight to hand at bottom edge of photo. The wheel rut of bare earth stretches vetrically in a straight line with lush greens crops growing either side creating a green corridor. Far ahead are trees at the field edge where the tractor ruts turn.

I went on a mini-hike today with an old friend from uni, along part of the #Ridgeway, walking North from Swyncombe Church. It was glorious! The church was lovely, too, but I didn’t snap any photos inside. #hiking #walking #TheRidgeway #oxfordshire #england #countryside #nature

My labrador loves walking the tractor wheel ruts in this field. Can do a big circuit around the wheel ruts. No crop there, so not walking anything down. He likes being in the field, in this green corridor, yet stays on the wheel paths.

A side project I started over the weekend - a map of how long pedestrians have to wait at traffic lights in Sydney to identify problematic intersections!

https://betterintersections.jakecoppinger.com/

It's powered by a Google Sheet, which you can contribute to with a simple Google Form: https://forms.gle/3FFGD5Jk14wUS22n6

Please have a look and if you're interested, contribute some measurements! I'll add more detailed instructions in the coming days.

Rolling hills with patches of light and dark green are topped with a thin layer of clouds below otherwise blue sky. The foreground contains tree tops, both leafy and dead.
Seaside canyon from the King Crest Trail.
Wispy clouds on the ridge tops on either side of the canyon reach down into its steep sides full of slides too steep for anything to grow. Less steep surfaces are topped with trees. Out the end of the canyon, the ocean is visible.
Looking back along the King Range to King Peak. Peaks of green under a mostly blue sky.
Now hiking on a grassy hill on Cooskie Creek Route, looking south along the King Range. Nearby, green grass has scattered Douglas firs. In the distance, hills are covered with the trees except for a grey spot of slide on Northslide Mountain.

Cracking walk today from the wonderfully named Wildboarclough, up to similarly well-named Toot Hill, down through Macclesfield Forest, and up to the interesting little peak of Shutlingsloe. #walking #peakDistrict #photography #landscapePhotography #hiking

Ordnance survey map of a 5.32 mile circular walk as described in the main post.
A field with alpacas dotted around, focussing on three standing quite close together in a line staring at us. The one on the left is sort of caramel coloured and the other two are black. The ones dotted around the field are a mixture of white and brown. Pleasant farmland climbs up the valley behind them, with a large are of evergreen woodland, and the odd deciduous tree around the walls in the middle of the picture.
Looking North towards Manchester from the slopes of Shutlingsloe. A tiny white speck on the left of the picture in the distance is Joddrell bank telescope.

The photo is taken from a well kept slab path on some high grassy moorland, looking towards a landscape of forest and hills. The sky is a pleasant mix of white clouds and blue.

It's been a strange weekend. Went to the markets with Kid4, then managed to sprain my ankle on the way home from the bus stop (Adam brought Jarrah, who was super excited and pulled me over while I was walking on some loose gravel). Super painful yesterday but a lot better today.

Now it's a grey Sunday and I've been out of sorts all day. I need to write but not feeling inspired. Currently drinking a ginger and lemon tea in the hopes I'll pull myself out of my doldrums.

I wanted to get some bulky items -- potting mix and chook food, which would be difficult to get without a car.

So I asked Dad if I could borrow his, and I picked it up last night and he came and collected it this afternoon. In the time I drove it (less than 24 hours) I got pulled over for RBT (random drug and alcohol testing) THREE TIMES 😂

That doesn't happen when you're walking and riding the bus!!

But I got the things I needed and sorted out a delivery in a month for chook food so I don't have to bother with that for a while.

Being carfree is otherwise going swimmingly...

Social media makes it easy to see how #motonormotivity affects the way people talk about safety. A new driver asked for tips on driving downtown. Pedestrians were the primary topic. The blame-shifting between “pedestrians have right of way but they don't wait for traffic to clear” and “go slow and wait for any pedestrians in the crosswalks" is clear. It is the responsibility of the less vulnerable to watch out for the more vulnerable.

Screenshot of Ordnance Survey map with a route marked out in blue of a 5 mile circular walk from Over Haddon in the north, through wooded river valley, around to Youlgreave then back over some hills.
Photo of the river Lathkill, approaching the nicest area, where there are a number of small weirs and the water is crystal clear with patches of healthy river plants etc. Our side of the bank is a sloped meadow with lots of buttercups, and the other side is heavily wooded with a mixture of evergreen and deciduous trees.
Duckling swimming through clear water over lots of healthy looking river plants, with ripples emanating in front as it powers along. The duckling is largely brown with pleasant yellowish markings on its face and chest, with some on the sides. Nice brown stripe going from the beak round to the back of the head.

A view down the path running along the side of the hill. The headland in the distance. The hillside is lush and green. The sea and sky blue, and running into each other.
A view over Porlock bay, looking over a bramble bush. The green marsh fields and sand visible below. The bay is a wide curve. The sea and sky are bright blue

I have clearly picked a less popular track. Hella steep. But lots of lovely foliage along its edges. Lovely sunny stitchwort. And as I turn back to check where I've come from I catch my first glimpse of a splash of sea through the leaves. Energizing!

A spray of delicate stitchwort. Its centred yellow, its foliage fine and light green.
Shady tress bend over the path and in a small gap we can glimpse the splash of blue that is the sea.

I start at the National Trust car park at Bossington, which is fairly busy so, me being me, I buck trend and rather than follow the ACTUAL South West Coast path, which skirts the lower edge of the hill, I take a path straight up, that will hopefully break the tree line sooner.

The Horner fords the footpath near the start of the route here. The lane is quite and the trees are doing wonderful things with the sunlight.
My fav Cuckoo's pint is starting to ripen.

River fording a track, the water in dappled shade, sunlight hitting the grass beyond on the opposite bank
A green cuckoos pint berry, peeping out of its brown sheath. It sits amongst other foliage.

Right mates! Who's up for a mooch round Bossington hill with me

Yesterday I went in search of a sea view, and boy did it deliver.

Bossington to Hurlstone point and back via Allerford wood

6 miles.

Let's go!

View over high heathland to Porlock Bay below. The heath in the fore ground is lush and green. The opposite headland in the distance is wooded and rocky. The sea is a pale blue, with haze fading into the clear blue sky above.

Made it up to the viewpoint on Larch Mountain for this first time this year. The ascent was just over 4000 feet if elevation over 7 miles and 3 hours. While the snow cooperated, the clouds unfortunately did not. I saw the tip of Mount Hood poking out of the clouds and could barely make out St Helens in the distance. The rest were hiding. The snow has mostly melted with some snow fields above 3500 feet.

The tip of Mount Hood poking out of the clouds. Above the clouds is a mostly blue sky with a few chemtrails.
Larch Mountain viewpoint on a partially cloudy morning. Mount Hood can be seen behind the viewing deck. Blue sky with a few clouds.
Sunrise behind the Columbia River looking between trees. Clearish blue sky above the sunrise.
Mount St Helens can be seen in the distance if you zoom in. Rolling forested hills of the Columbia River Gorge are beneath the clouds and blue sky.

It's been a glorious day for a hike. It was supposed to be 8 miles but turned into almost 12. The mountain in the last pic 8s the one we walked to the top of 😊

Two hills form a V shaped valley with the sides covered in green shrubs and bushes. The sky above is blue and the foreground is a pond of muddy brown water with a small patch of sky reflected in it.
The view from the top of a mountain looking down at a valley below, where a village stretches out into the distance. The hills either side are green and covered in grass and fir trees, and the sky above is blue.
A tall waterfall tumbles over a rocky cliff. The sky above is blue and there are large rocks in the foreground. There are lots of green shrubs growing through the rocks on the cliffs and foreground
A large green field covered with yellow buttercups. There are a few terraced houses in sight on the left of the photo, and the roof of a tall building just visible on the right.
In the background is a mountain range, and one of them stands out, stretching up to a blue sky. The lower half of the mountain is covered in fir trees.

Darby Creek Valley Park, PA

It’s been 9 days since the last time I fly fished 🤔

Finishing up a busy week with quiet two hours on Friday evening, which is extremely important for me 😊

Eagle Creek Trail Backpacking: Day 2

Hiked south from Wy’East Camp to check out the more impressive waterfalls. Tunnel Falls came first and is probably the most popular on this trail, and for good reason, it’s amazing. Just past there is Twister Falls, which is my favorite. The twist looks better and more defined when the water is rushing less. Once past the waterfall corridor, the trees are very burnt in areas.

Tunnel Falls. The trail in the foreground is on a steep rock ledge and enters a tunnel blasted behind the waterfall. The waterfall is on the right side of the tunnel. You can see the trail on the other side behind the waterfall.
Tunnel Falls. The iconic waterfall drops nearly 160 feet and soon will enter Eagle Creek. The entire canyon around the waterfall is a steep rock ledge. The trail is blasted into the side of the ledge. Tall trees can be seen above the falls.
Twister Falls. The flow of the waterfall starts dropping from two directions and creates a twist. The water in the photo is rushing so much that the twist is not very defined but looks amazing in the Summer and Fall.
Trail continuing up towards Wahtum Lake. This is a major burn scar and the trees are very black and dead. Fallen trees are on the ground.

Phytoncides - the chemicals emitted by trees that protect them against germs & parasites, but which also benefit our nervous systems/immune response/mood.

Grateful for a lunchtime walk along this leafy lane - the mood uplift from fresh greens, the contrast between the first warmth of spring & the cool of the shadows, the body & mind resetting a bit after a morning in front of a screen.

A leafy lane, old mossy stone walls, a blue sky. The light is very clear and uplifting, the green leaves are those first spring leaves - small and bright.
