Ukraine’s military reports that the Russians have “blown up” the Nova Kakhovka Dam upstream of Kherson.

It looks like it may have been full due to Russians holding back water (possibly to cause scarcity downstream). Full capacity is 18.1 km³ of water, or 3x the capacity of Shasta Lake and about half the capacity of Lake Mead.

Below is a link to the latest weekly update from Alan Urban — all the news you'll wish you didn't have to hear about the ongoing collapse of global industrial civilization.

Alan says:

"This week I have news about unprecedented wildfires, cities running out of water, accelerated global warming, skyrocketing potato prices, the first-ever plastic rain forecast, fears that AI will destroy us all, the crossing of planetary boundaries, food insecurity in the Middle East, escalation of the war in Ukraine, and much more."

As I've said before, this is not the most cheerful reading. Still, if you can handle a barrage of unpleasant truths without becoming overly depressed or going insane, I certainly recommend it. Alan always does a great job of compiling lots of important info in a quick-read format.

For some reason I've become quite brave on this Europe trip about asking for a glass of tap water when ordering a meal. If you don't feel like drinking alcohol, those pissy little 200ml bottles they serve here are a rip-off.

(The ultimate test will be doing it in Germany next time I visit there. I anticipate sharply withdrawn breath and disapproving looks from waiters when I order "Leitungswasser" - which I think literally means "plumbing water".)

“When rainwater falls on [the Great Basin] or snowmelt flows into it, it acts like “a big sponge,” Wohl said. A sponge that can store water for later, and clean it, too. But if you turn it into a parking lot by filling or building on it, as the Supreme Court ruling makes it easier to do, water will pour off it, rather than soak in. And what was once a playa—part of an intricate system changing across space and time—will become simply an asphalt wasteland.”

Image description from NASA's Flickr: A two-part graphic on a black background. In a small box at top left, there is a clear image of Saturn's moon Enceladus, shown as a bright white-gray sphere. It is labeled “Enceladus (Cassini)” based on the spacecraft that captured it. The rest of the graphic shows Webb’s data of Enceladus and a large water plume. The data is presented as a blue, pixelated square that appears rotated at an angle. At the bottom is the label: “plume (Webb).” The box at top left with the Cassini image has a line drawn to a red box surrounding a single white pixel in the Webb data. The entire moon is represented by that outlined pixel. Below the pixel representing Enceladus is a large, roughly triangular-shaped area of brighter blue pixels, which is narrower near the moon and gets wider as it extends to the bottom of the Webb image. This shows a water vapor plume extending from the moon’s southern pole.

Well over a billion people rely on water from snow and glacier melt, carried downstream by the major river basins of the world. The irreversible changes in the global cryosphere will therefore affect adaptation strategies and access to water resources.
Info graphic

Arctic permafrost is melting and is a “sleeping giant” of greenhouse gases. Arctic permafrost stores twice as much carbon as in the atmosphere today. Thawing mountains and Arctic permafrost creases increased risk of natural cascading hazards.

The new #SCOTUS ruling on the Clean Water Act is a big loss for wetlands throughout the country, but especially for the arid portions of the West.

Reporting from NPR: “…only wetlands that have a continuous surface connection to a body of water are covered by the law.”

There are many critical wetland regions in the west that are perched (not directly connected to other water) due to geology and there are many water bodies that don’t have #water year round.
