IMHO there's no valid excluse not to have a easy-to-use, free and publicly accessible #API like #Zulip, #ntfy or even #Oshi has.
Everything else is just #AntiAccessibility by design and should be outlawed!
I'm suddenly realizing why I prefer web apps over native apps. Basic things like text selection and zoom tend to work similarly across web apps, but native apps often implement them in different ways or not at all. Sure you can break things like zoom and text selection in a web app... but you have to actively break them. If you leave them alone, the browser handles it fairly consistently across all pages.
This is on my mind right now because a lot of mastodon clients are PWAs and I was struggling to understand why I seem to prefer those to native clients. These days I prefer https://semaphore.social but there are lots of good ones. I also use Windows, Android, and iOS so it's nice to have software that works the same on all of them.

Nächstes Jahr (so u.a. die Behauptung in z.B. https://www.howtogeek.com/898753/the-new-outlook-for-windows-will-arrive-for-everyone-in-2024/ ) soll dieses neue #Outlook wohl auch die #Mail- und #Kalender-Apps aus dem #MicrosoftStore ersetzen und zudem auch #vorinstalliert werden in #Windows11. #Microsoft schließt also endlich das leidige Kapitel der doppelten #Office- und #Store-Apps und ersetzt alles durch #Webapps. Bei #OneNote waren sie damit ja wieder zurückgerollt und haben das Office-OneNote wieder zum Standard gemacht (aber idiotischerweise nur für Windows).

I've found a good reason to hold my nose and try ban app instead of my mobile browser for #Mastodon — I want to set a wellness timer, but don't want it to apply to all Firefox usage.
I'll have to experiment a bit to see if there's an app I can tolerate — not too busy/fussy, but with the core features I'm used to in the website, like following new hashtags. It doesn't look like this (the default app) is going to make the cut.
I'm trying to move away from Brave (because of the Everything; I have been using Brave+Firefox for years), but holy hell, turns out Chromium is really hard to live without... Why are the profiles in Firefox so unusable?? Why did they kill webapp support!? Ungoogled-Chromium here I come... once I get it set up...

Elevate the quality of what6 you are giving to your users by adding a service worker to handle offline scenarios and proper manifest file.

In ancient times, we learned system #programming by implementing toy versions of operating systems, compilers, network protocols, database engines, graphics renderers, and simulators (of mechanical systems, electrical systems, computer systems, astronomical systems, etc.).
I'd like to know how the kids today learn system programming in college. Indeed, I wonder if system programming is still part of a typical CS curriculum, given how few (as in almost none) of the young entrants into IT knows anything about this subject.

Underrated aspect of responsive web apps: It’s easy to scale their user interfaces.
Common scales are:
* Phone
* Tablet
* Desktop
* TV (roughly: phone UI on a large screen, with a remote control as an input device)
My use case: Watching videos via the YouTube web app on my 27" Mac screen like on a TV. I can still reach my keyboard but sit farther away than usual and zoom into the app.

So much business #software involves performing similar-but-different edits on a list of items. So it's not batch, but you want to be able to do it quickly and efficiently. All of our patterns for doing this in #webapps suck.
Modals without permanent URIs. Endless back-and-forth clicking with load times of greater than 500ms. Waiting for an edit to complete on item 1 before letting me move on to item 2.
