The apricot globe mallow is finally in bloom on the property. A little slow getting there this year, but not as slow as the year in which we had no rain until Sept.!

This is a perennial shrub native to parts of Calif, Nevada, Utah, Ariz, and New Mexico, also Sonora and Baja in NW Mexico.

Reverse image search tells me this sweet-scented wildflower is Joe Pye weed. Feel free to correct me, this is not at all an area of expertise for me. Whatever it is, you could smell its sweet scent from a long way off and the bees seemed to like it.

In a lush green wetland in a forest, several plants with clusters of elongated pinkish violet flowers with white projections are growing. The plant in the foreground is covered with honey bees, three in front atop blossom clusters and one a bit below and to our left. This last bee is mostly hidden by the plants leaves, but its head and part of its body is visible.

A cluster of spring blue dicks blossoms.

These beautiful – but oddly-named — wildflowers are all over the place in the San Francisco Bay Area during the spring months. They first appear during that magical period when the tall grasses are intensely green from winter rains, and then they stick around as the hills begin to turn brown or, as we like to say in California, “golden.” While I see these flowers every season, this was a banner year for them.

The zebra longwing is a neotropical butterfly that occurs in extreme southern portions of the United States southward through Mexico, Central America and the West Indies to South America. Adults occasionally wander northward.

Another little wildflower from Ontario's forests (and my garden in this case): Rose-twisted Stalk (Streptopus lanceolatus). The pink bells hang from a zigzag stalk, close to the ground.
Later, the Robins will park their kids here under the leaves so they can pluck off the red berries dangling in front of their beaks. Hard work for the little ones.

Dappled sunlight spills over a forest floor. The ground is covered with small fawn lilies. Each lily has a pair of thick green leaves sprouting from the ground, and a single flower stalk capped with a yellow flower with large petals that curve backwards. Some of the fawn lilies are in the shadows and some are highlighted by spots of sunlight.

I've been waiting for these flowers, today they opened in the garden: Blue Wild/False Indigo (Baptisia australis). Apparently at one time they were used as a substitute dye to replace the very expensive Indigo.

Trail down from Windy Point to Punta Gorda and its lighthouse. The lighthouse is a small pillar just visible on the side of the hill in the distance. A flat, grassy old road drops toward a black beach under a grey sky. A line of rocks splits the sandy beach from the ocean and it's gentle (today) waves, at least at this low tide.

Trail south of Punta Gorda Lighthouse only slightly occupied by a single elephant seal sleeping in the groove. The trail is a dirt line between green growth, some of it flowering. To the left, green hills rise. To the right, dark sandy beach descends becoming rocky. Other elephant seals are scattered on the beach. The sky is foreboding with grey cloud.

A snapshot of the little mini wildflower meadow in my yard.

It's a messy bed crammed w flowers & native grasses. All things I planted "one of" that have reseeded/spread w abundance. It's also full of weeds. So many weeds, lol. I do love my dandelions.

It's been an absolute bee & butterfly magnet this year. The photos I'm getting are astonishing.

Messy. Wild. Glorious. It just brings me such indescribable joy.
