Park Mandarin Duck is a small landscape-orientation expressive acrylic painting of a brightly coloured Mandarin Duck drake swimming across a dull green pond. The Mandarin Duck is in the centre of the painting, facing towards the right. Painted in a loose kaleidoscope of colours, its head has a russet red lower half, with a streak of white running along on top of this, then blue, red and blue feathers on top of its head. The duck’s lower body is painted in stripes of black and white at its chest, with a dappled light brown along with length of its body. It has bright russet wings held in sails, with brown tail feathers. These colours are reflected in loosely painted dapples on the water. The water itself is painted in a dull olive green, with ripples of white running across it, to show the movement of the duck through the water.

In this drawing, the inspiration is close to home. The northern cardinal eggs in the cedar in our yard have hatched! Three babies are making tiny peeps, and the mom is busy feeding them; the least we can do is give her a drink. In a past job, I was an admin/marketing assistant for an ecological restoration/consulting company. I got to support our PhD ecologist on a bird/bat study for green energy, and even got to help with echolocation evaluation.

The 'Shamrock' or 'Pumpkin' Orbweaver spider, Araneus trifolium... painted on an oyster shell. Most of the orb-weavers we see in our garden are Cross Orbweavers, which are European imports. The Shamrock Orbweaver is native to North America, and comes in a range of colors.

I thought a long time about how to do the web, as I wanted to keep the white background of the oyster shell. In real life, the web would be hard to see with such a light backdrop. I eventually settled on dewdrops painted with silver, and consoled myself that it was artistic license.

Purple Shore Crab (Hemigrapsus nudus), and a bit of Shakespeare.

These little guys are everywhere on the shores of the Salish Sea, scurrying under rocks or raising their tiny claws at you, offering a fight.

I used five different reference photos (and video stills), to cobble together a leg and claw arrangement I liked. Its facial expression turned out a little more pouty than grumpy, but that's okay; I think it still works.

Cougar (Puma concolor) and shore pine, painted on an oyster shell.

One of the (many) challenges of this one was how to portray a cougar in a way that didn't make it look like it belonged airbrushed onto the side of a van. You know the look: cat with predatory stare, full moon in the background. Or, snarling cat like a tough team mascot.

Instead, I went with a cat stretch.

The shore pine (Pinus contorta) was my own super subtle joke about cats and their contortions, as well as the contortions of the oyster shell.

I like to see how other people's art goes from concept to finished product, so here's how my Douglas squirrel shell was made.

It started with a photo of the oyster shell, on which I made a sketch of my design. I used the grid method to transfer the drawing onto the shell (I erased the grid from the shell, afterward).

After that, it was a matter of layers of paint, and correcting a too-long front paw.

I’ve begun a drawing that uses my own photo as a ref for the background and one from pixabay as a ref for the fox kits, while following a tutorial on the kits (Bonny Snowdon). The loose sketching is freaking me out, lol. I usually draw in detail, section by section, but am making myself try this new (to me) method of sketching in tonal values across the foxes before adding detail. It’s good to experiment — even if you’re rubbish at sketching, as I am 🫣 #ColouredPencils #WildlifeArt #RedFox

Another Puget Sound Garter Snake, this time with a Columbia Lily. I was a bit inspired by the work of naturalist Mark Catesby (1683-1749), who combined animals and plants in aesthetically pleasing, if sometimes surprising, arrangements. The snake and lily in this painting can be found in the same meadow environment, which is part of the reason I put them together. (The other part is that orange and blue are striking together.)
