A small Woodpecker with a short, black beak, a thickly striped black-and-white head with a small, bright red patch on the back of it, black-and-white barred wings, white underparts, and a black back with a large white patch down the center hangs from a very thin branch. His back is towards the camera and slightly twisted to the left, and he is looking to the right of the picture. The background is full of more thin branches covered in small red-and-green leaves, some a little bit in focus, but most getting blurrier as the depth of the photo increases. Blurred blues and greens from the sky and other trees in the distance mix behind the branches.

Here's another shot of the European hare I saw yesterday (my girlfriend calls them "scary bunnies" due to their large size and frankly giant eyes), taken just a few seconds before the ones I posted last night.

A short encounter, but when I've seen hares on previous occasions, they've never stuck around long enough to get the camera turned on (...at best, I'd notice them hopping away). This one seemed really curious!

I saw a potoo!!!!

A nocturnal bird that eats insects. During the day, it pretends to be a dead branch. I have no idea how Alonso saw it in the distance, behind several layers of trees and even less idea on how I managed to get a decent photo.

They approached, looking all cute and innocent, and one grabbed the camera. I told it "Hey little buddy, that's mine" and got to see all of its teeth 😬. I still got to keep my camera. Now I know to not call them "little buddy". And yes, I let them get their fingers all over my lens because that's how cute they are.

Bit off topic this one (technically still miniature 😆) but it’s been quite a pleasant weekend for weather here in Yorkshire & really great to see a healthy bee population in our flower bed I thought I’d go out and take some snaps of the fluffy beasts…

Early this morning, I went to a village a half-dozen kilometers from my town with the goal of walking back home and maybe photographing a bird or three on the way. Barely 10 minutes along, on a deserted path along a lake (great crested grebe nest!), I noticed something hopping towards me in the distance.

Amazingly, this European hare approached to within 15 meters or so before making a right into the forest!

A black lemur I saw in a tree in northern Madagascar in 2019 #WildlifePhotography

The lemur's fur is entirely black. It is clinging to a branch with two paws, peering out with orange eyes. Its tail is as long as the rest of its body, and hangs down from the tree getting wider towards the bottom.

I'm sharing this photo I took of two black bears playing for #SilentSunday because that's what I was when I came across them while hiking...I kept perfectly silent and still as they wrestled like I wasn't even there. I'm still not sure if they even saw me. Eventually they curled up for a nap behind a bush.

Not my favourite photo, but one of my favourite birds — the Great Spotted Woodpecker!

This is a male one as can be seen by the red patch at the back of his head. Females' heads are completely black.

Today's PSA: Please leave wild babies alone. We saw this little one wandering around alone last night and again this morning. Mom was nowhere in sight either time, but within a couple of hours of seeing it this morning, she was stopping by to touch base (and noses) and was off again after a couple of minutes. It's very rare when human intervention is needed. *Photos taken from a long, respectful distance.

#deer #wildlife #nature #photography #NaturePhotography #WildlifePhotography

A recently-born fawn with a rusty-red coat with white spots stands among a tangle of bare branches in a brush pile. It had just come out of hiding because Mom was nearby (unseen in photo) and was making its way to her.
Mom, with her rusty-red coat, is seen standing in a clear field behind a thick, round fence post with thin wires stretching to the next post. She is facing the left of the photo and is looking to her fawn (unseen) who is coming out of the brush pile on the other side of the fence.
After Mom left, the fawn decided to take a short walk around before heading back to the brush pile. Here it is seen just in front of the fence wires, heading toward the trunk of a nearby tree. Its ears are laid back, it's right rear leg is lifted in step, and its body is somewhat hunched as it is cautiously making its way around while sticking to whatever shadows it can find.

Crow.

That's it. That's the post.

(Actually, in this shot you can observe the feathers concealing the crow's ear: the auricular feathers – or: ear coverts – are pointing backwards sort of radially-ish from an area below its eye.)

A medium-sized bird with a black-and-white barred back, buff-colored belly, throat, and head, and a bright red cap and nape sits, crouched on a thin branch, facing the right. His tail feathers are curled in towards his belly, and he looks alert for anything that might be out of place. Surrounding him are more thin branches, covered in dark red and green leaves that have created a lopsided frame for the bird. The background is a mix of dark and light greens.

Met a snake friend while out riding today, just casually crossing the path under a bridge.
By the time they'd crossed, there were several of us standing around basically just gushing at how pretty snek was. Including one couple who took a photo, then typed something into their phone and showed me the translation app they had: "We just sent this photo to Brazil."

Nictitating membrane off, nictitating membrane on.

(It's interesting how in some species, the nictitating membrane is fully transparent, while in crows, it's almost completely opaque – I guess they're dealing with fewer predators, so a robust eye cleaning tool is more important than uninterrupted vision.)
