Windmill.

N-gauge (1:160 scale) windmill, repaired and repainted.

The sails had been glued on to the body. I removed this and repaired the axle so that the sails now spin freely.

The whole thing was then painted up in a realistic style.

My photo of a windmill at the Shear Outback museum in Hay, New South Wales. I played with the image in photoshop to get this higher contrast, limited colour, look. Great museum focusing on the wool trade. I learned that shearers expended over 6000 kCalories of energy per day. Amazing.

Went looking for the ruined #Windmill in #MerthyrMawr Burrows yesterday. Armed only with google maps and after forcing my way through literally meters of dense undergrowth 😉 ......I found it.

It is thought to have been built in the late #medieval period. At some point, probably in the 16th century, it became buried in the sand before eventually appearing again in about 1823

A narrow path through dense undergrowth. Both sides are hemmed in with closely growing shrubs, some just starting to show this years foliage. The ground is littered with old moss covered fallen branches

My first view of the ruined windmill, a curving wall made from large grey stone blocks, rises to about 4m, everything above that height has long since been lost. Trees and shrubs encroach on all sides and the ground is covered in lush green nettles

As I moved around the windmill, a large ,roughly circular hole could be seen at the base of the circular wall

Further around a large opening allowed a view inside the mill which was filled with vegetation, including a small tree

Scratch-built to my highest precision, with reference to the CAD designs of a real windmill.

In World War II it was used by the Home Guard as a lookout post. The mill was converted into a house in 1963, and externally restored. The sweeps (Sussex dialect for sails) were replaced in 1974. This is my nearest large open space, and I love it.
