My letter to the #Winnipeg Free Press on academic freedom in light of objections to my colleagues holding a panel on Palestine and genocide. #academia #academicfreedom #palestine #academicchatter #university #college

The backlash to the planned teach-in at the University of Winnipeg demonstrates clearly why academic freedom is essential to the functioning of a robust democracy and to an open campus environment that is committed to critical inquiry. Academic freedom does not mean staking out a neutral position; it does not mean balance. It is not unlimited and is constrained by law and by ethical guidelines. Rather, academic freedom refers to the right and responsibility of faculty members – a right usually enshrined in collective agreements in Canadian universities – to discuss issues, even challenging and divisive ones, without interference or censorship; to pursue research and teaching as they see fit and in line with their expertise. Without these protections and rights, it would be impossible for professors to do their jobs: to critique, to criticize, to challenge, to teach, and to share and advance knowledge. As a Faculty Association, we hold academic freedom as a core principle that permits all the important work of the University to happen, that is teaching and research, and without which Universities would simply not function or exist properly.

The Alouettes had to battle for every point over the last two months, while #Toronto (big losers last week to Montreal) and the Blue Bombers largely coasted. I believe this helped the Alouettes to be in better form to win the final while Winnipeg clearly wasn’t sharp. (At least the Bombers weren’t as bad as the Argos last week.) #football 🏈🇨🇦

Article’s a month old, but what an absolutely hellish idea (i.e. the cyclist licensing, not the registry). Cyclists in #Winnipeg have next to nothing as far as infrastructure goes. Stripping cyclists of their anonymity (i.e. lack of identifiable license plate) would make it drastically more dangerous to ride. Drivers already play cop and chase cyclists down to threaten them with violence, we don’t need an additional means that make that easier for them. This seems like a veiled effort to eliminate cycling.

(Paywalled) https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/2023/06/12/city-moves-forward-on-revamped-bike-registry-report

"A lot of people are using bikes as a legitimate form of commuting... I think having a licence plate on your bicycle is a way of making sure that you are less anonymous on your bike, as well," said Coun. Jeff Browaty (North Kildonan).

The councillor said he thinks a licence requirement would help police enforce rules of the road for cyclists.

"If you are found to be rolling through every stop sign down a street, if you're found to be breaking other laws of the road, the licence plate would (link) at least back to the bicycle owner," said Browaty.

The City of Winnipeg is working very hard to hide the truth about the claimed benefits of the proposed widening of Route 90.

Many of the claims run counter to general modern road design concepts, but even the city's own data contradicts the claims.

I know there's only, like four Winnipeggers who follow me here, but holy shit is this huge and awesome and long overdue. I am so excited about this!

#Winnipeg

How to say Winnipeg's new street names. Try them. Repeat them. Learn them. Use them.

Bishop Grandin Boulevard to Abinojii Mikanah (A-bin-oh-gee Mee-kin-ah)

Bishop Grandin Trail to Awasisak Méskanow (Aa-wa-sis-uk Me-ska-noh)

Grandin Street to Taapweewin Way (Tap-way- win)

A quest for knowledge is an important factor in staying young when you're retired so I was excited to discover that Winnipeg is famous for the Fat Boy Burger. Not sure how this important fact didn't come to my attention earlier during business trips to the Peg. Obviously I was not exposed to the city's full spectrum of culture. I wonder if there is a faithful version local to me here in Caledon Ontario?

In stories about #Ottawa's canal, the 'longest skating rink in the world' and I think about what a jerk move it was for #Winnipeg to go plow a strip of their river, longer than ours just to steal the title.

I mean really – let us have that.

So now we carefully say "largest" instead, since ours isn't truck-wide strip up the middle of a river but rather a wide surface between stone walls.

I lived in Winnipeg, have family there, and like it, but it just seems like a bit of an a*hole move.
