YORK FACTORY EXPRESS JOURNALS, 1849:
"Left Grand Rapid about 1 am but were obliged to put ashore about 7 o'clock in consequence of the ice being in large large masses in Lake #Winnipeg, and it not only being useless but dangerous for us to proceed. L'Esperance with 7 boats in his charge arrived at our encampment, being on his way to Portage la Loche. He had been five days coming from Norway House.
"Thursday. Started this morning at 2 o'clock am with a light breeze.... #CanadaHistory #Books
YORK FACTORY EXPRESS JOURNAL, 1849:
"The canoe returned after an hours absence with the unfortunate news that Lake #Winnipeg appeared "like winter." Fearing that we might be detained here some time 4 nets were set in the #Saskatchewan River, which before night provided us with 12 sturgeon and upwards of 30 jackfish. One of the Indians succeeded in killing a moose deer. Fine weather.
"Friday. Peter Calder the guide with a crew of men in one boat visited the Lake... #HistoricJourney #AmWriting
YORK FACTORY EXPRESS JOURNAL, 1849:
"By 10 am all the boats were safely taken down to the end of Grand Rapid. Here we found an Indian with his canoe, which with two men Mr. Rowand despatches to Lake #Winnipeg, to see if the passage was clear. The canoe returned after an hours absence with the unfortunate news that the Lake appeared "like winter." Fearing that we might be detained here some time 4 nets were set in the River, which before night provided us.... #Manitoba #History #HistoricJourney
YORK FACTORY EXPRESS JOURNAL,1849:
"Very cold morning. We took leave of Mr. Hunter at 9 am and went a far as the "Feast Point," a the head of Muddy Lake, which we reached about 6 pm. Blowing a strong head wind all night. It was also very cold, a circumstance that makes us fear there is still ice in Lake #Winnipeg
"Tuesday. Owing to a heavy sea blowing ahead of us we were not able to leave our camp before 3 pm. We put shore for the night at the end of "Lac Vaseur." #HistoricJourney #AmWriting
I'm a #Winnipeg boy, aside from a few unfortunate years in Saskatoon. I will not be running back.
Anyways been living outside the range of most municipal services the last six years, including water, so we have a well, and a softener.
This is what happens when you forget to top up the salt in the softener and take a shower.
Missing Woman in Winnipeg, Manitoba - Hao “Helen” LUO, 47 - #Manitoba #Winnipeg
Another great post from The Elmwood Guy.
In so-called #Winnipeg, demonstrators blocked trains in solidarity with #Palestine, calling for an end to the war in #Gaza. "The protesters were seen blocking the rail line north of Union Station until around 7 p.m. Monday evening."
My impression after reviewing a bunch of apps for #Winnipeg Transit bus schedules is that they were designed by people who drive their cars to work.
It’s Supper Time! Look what just arrived in the mail, courtesy of my journo-buddy @bkives in #Winnipeg. @coreymintz is worried about where he’s going to get his next meal. (I’m wondering where our food came from!) Can’t wait to dig in.
I wasn’t surprised in the least by #Montreal winning the #GreyCup last night in the #CFL championship game over favoured #Winnipeg. The Alouettes had to battle for every point over the last two months, while #Toronto (big losers last week to Montreal) and the Blue Bombers largely coasted. I believe this helped the Alouettes to be in better form to win the final while Winnipeg clearly wasn’t sharp. (At least the Bombers weren’t as bad as the Argos last week.) #football 🏈🇨🇦
Guess who decided to take his toddler on bus to the Forks during the Santa Claus parade? Apparently transit detour details are on X? Useless lol. #Winnipeg
I'm not sure what these scarves around Old Market Square are here for, but it's just one of many things that makes for an interesting walk from Downtown to the Exchange District today. There's lots going on at the convention centre, a home Jets game, and the Santa Claus Parade down Portage. Possibly a nightmare for drivers; very nice mild temperatures and sunny skies for pedestrians. 😎 #Winnipeg
A thoughtful review of The Lost Supper in today’s #Winnipeg Free Press @winnipegfreepress Something I really value—the Free Press is one of the last independent dailies standing, and one of the only places where books are still reviewed in Canada
‘A chance to heal’: #Winnipeg looks to change street names
“Reports from the Property and Development Committee meeting show the city has budgeted more than $105,000 for costs associated with changing Grandin Street to Taapweewin Way, and more than $211,000 to turn Bishop Grandin Boulevard into Abinooji Mikanah.
Bishop Grandin is considered one of the architects of the residential school system”
@ingalls I wish there were a few more here, but the options are few.
They also run the Glenwood PWS account, which is current conditions from a neighborhood just south of downtown.: @glenwood_pws
I hope this helps, and I will let you know if I do see someone else join from the area.
I've listened to a bunch of episodes now (most recently the Polio one) and it's fascinating to see how the city developed, who was making the news, and how big events were handled back in the day.
Welp, time to #getFediHired I guess.
I can figure anything out. Lately I do #Python for Hollywood as a #TD (#blender3d, #Nuke, #Katana). Before that role, I built the render farm and did all the #IT for Tangent #Animation #Winnipeg for the first 4 years. #BSD #CCNA #lpic1

"Every use of deadly force by police in the province requires an inquest to determine how and why it happened. In theory, this prevents fear or favour from influencing the decision whether or not to hold one, ensures that an initial investigation will not simply shut down a case, and offers every family suffering through a loss the chance to ask their questions, and get their answers." https://thebigstorypodcast.ca/2023/10/10/in-manitoba-police-killings-require-inquests-so-where-are-they/ #News #Winnipeg
After living in the Lower Mainland of BC for over 16 years, this is going to take some getting used to. :mastocold:
Frost on the ground, clear skies, bright sun, two degrees above freezing. So glad to have proper #Winnipeg weather again.

INCREDIBLE turnout at the Rally for Trans Youth today. The legislature grounds were chock full of queers and allies—and that turn out was with under a week's notice.
My faith in humanity (and Manitobans) is much stronger after seeing the outpouring of love and support at this event.
Peg City Don't Play!
Part 1 of a series of articles in the @winnipegfreepress that examine two decades of inequests into police shootings.
I was shocked by the extremely lengthy delays and lack of importance placed on such inquests. This is the kind of in-depth journalism that is so important to society.
I was at my neighbourhood Shopper’s and the security guard was patrolling the store with an umbrella under his arm like it was an assault rifle wtf #Winnipeg
It's a move to include our relatives north and south of the medicine lines, as well as #Indigenous reporters around the globe.
TODAY, in #Winnipeg:
"Protesters... continued to call on the government to search the Prairie Green Landfill.
"A round dance started at the intersection at 2 p.m. with many people showing up carrying signs, flags and drums.
"Some of the signs said 'We Are Not Trash' and 'Bring Our Women Home.'
"They also painted a giant red dress in the middle of the intersection, a symbol for missing and murdered #Indigenous women and girls."
"...The blockade went up last week after the province refused to fund a search of #PrairieGreen #Landfill north of #Winnipeg for the remains of two #Indigenous women. The city ordered those blocking the roadway to vacate by noon Monday.
Article’s a month old, but what an absolutely hellish idea (i.e. the cyclist licensing, not the registry). Cyclists in #Winnipeg have next to nothing as far as infrastructure goes. Stripping cyclists of their anonymity (i.e. lack of identifiable license plate) would make it drastically more dangerous to ride. Drivers already play cop and chase cyclists down to threaten them with violence, we don’t need an additional means that make that easier for them. This seems like a veiled effort to eliminate cycling.
The City of Winnipeg is working very hard to hide the truth about the claimed benefits of the proposed widening of Route 90.
Many of the claims run counter to general modern road design concepts, but even the city's own data contradicts the claims.
This post does a great job breaking the mythical claims down
I have achieved peak #weakerthans fandom*, or at least peak desperation for fresh Weakerthans-related output: I ordered a lil wall hanging woven by John K. Samson paying tribute to the only cat I have ever truly loved. #wpg #winnipeg #cancon
*On further thought, peak was probably flying to Winnipeg in December to see their four albums/four nights shows but this is close
I know there's only, like four Winnipeggers who follow me here, but holy shit is this huge and awesome and long overdue. I am so excited about this!
A quest for knowledge is an important factor in staying young when you're retired so I was excited to discover that Winnipeg is famous for the Fat Boy Burger. Not sure how this important fact didn't come to my attention earlier during business trips to the Peg. Obviously I was not exposed to the city's full spectrum of culture. I wonder if there is a faithful version local to me here in Caledon Ontario?
On February 18, 2023, Steinbach RCMP received a report of a missing 15-year-old female from the RM of Tache.
Tessa Bird was last seen on February 18, at 1:30 pm near Kildonan Place shopping mall, in Winnipeg....
In stories about #Ottawa's canal, the 'longest skating rink in the world' and I think about what a jerk move it was for #Winnipeg to go plow a strip of their river, longer than ours just to steal the title.
I mean really – let us have that.
So now we carefully say "largest" instead, since ours isn't truck-wide strip up the middle of a river but rather a wide surface between stone walls.
I lived in Winnipeg, have family there, and like it, but it just seems like a bit of an a*hole move.
