Pewnego gorącego dnia lat temu 11 zdarzyło mi się prowadzić ostatnie seminarium w krótkim cyklu zorganizowanym wówczas przez Fundację Nowoczesna Polska, obecnie znaną pod nazwą Wolne Lektury. Tematem spotkania był ruch hakerski, punktem wyjścia była książka Levy'ego o jego historii, ale rozmowa szybko została zdominowana bieżącym wtedy tematem działań na rzecz włączenia kobiet.
Był to pewien moment przejścia. Działał już program stypendiów dla kobiet w GNOME, który miał się potem znaleźć w oku tego cyklonu, ale konflikt wokół niego miał dopiero napęcznieć. My rozmawialiśmy raczej o perspektywie przewalczenia tego rysu kultury hakerskiej, którą przedstawiałem jako blokadę dla rozwoju: „przywileju geniusza”, pozwalającego hakerowi, zwłaszcza w roli BDFL, być skończonym bucem — rysu, którego symbolem był oczywiście Linus Torvalds.
Rozmawialiśmy o tym, dlaczego rosnące wtedy jak grzyby po deszczu inicjatywy kobiece (byłem wtedy mentorem w pierwszych Geek Girls Carrots, w Krakowie startowało polskie Rails Girls, potem pojawiły się kolejne: Girls Code Fun etc.) celują w środowisko startupowe, ale bardzo, bardzo szerokim łukiem omijają chłopacki świat związany z kulturą hakerską.
Czy zmiana nastąpiła? Do pewnego stopnia niewątpliwie. Projekty open source poprzyjmowały codes of conduct, uwrażliwiły używane słownictwo, delegowały osoby ds inkluzywności. Do wielu bucowatych BDFL chyba dotarło, że środowisko ma problem odstraszający sporą część potencjalnych cennych uczestniczek. Torvalds, ze swoim zawsze ciętym językiem, na lata zniknął mi z pola widzenia.
Został mi przypomniany w paru ostatnich dniach, gdy parę osób, niezależnie i w różnych miejscach, celebrowało fediwersowy rant Torvaldsa nt. „#woke”. Rant był deklaracją ogólnie słusznych wartości, ale był też intelektualnie zupełnie miałki, za to — w klasycznym stylu — bucowaty, kończąc się nazwaniem oponenta „jebaną hańbą dla rodzaju ludzkiego”.
Wiele osób mówi, że #fediwersum przypomina atmosferą „tamte lata”. Obawiam się, że mają rację.

jeżeli jest to celowe i świadome, to jest to: złośliwość, chamstwo, dokuczanie, gnębienie
Idąc dalej, pojęcie “mikroagresji” samo w sobie jest oksymoronem bo łączy pojęcie, które z definicji oznacza przekroczenie pewnej granicy relacji międzyludzkich z przyrostkiem, który właściwie sugeruje, że tej granicy się nie przekracza.
Ma to taki sam sens jak “mikropobicie”, “mikrogwałt” albo “mikromorderstwo” - czyli z jednej strony rozdęcie zachowania, które tej granicy nie przekracza tak, by brzmiało jakby ją przekraczało, a z drugiej strony podkreślenie, że w sumie to jednak nie przekracza. Czyli w gruncie rzeczy jest jedynie zabiegiem erystycznym.
W analogiczny sposób Rosjanie mówią o “amorficznym nazizmie” w Ukrainie (czyli brak jest powszechnych objawów nazizmu, ale oni wiedzą, że ten nazizm jest), tak samo w ZSRR była “schizofrenia bezobjawowa” lub “pełzająca”.

I occasionally watch Bill Maher (ironically more on Youtube than HBO), & I discovered this interview of Elon Musk by Bill Maher which I found to be oddly fascinating.

Although I abhor his personality, Elon Musk has contributed towards the betterment of humanity due to the various companies he owns (whether through starting them like SpaceX or taking over like he did with Tesla).
Tesla helped popularize electric vehicles, while SpaceX is popularizing reusable rockets (the latter is helping reduce the cost of space flight too).
Bill Maher surprisingly did not push back against Elon Musk’s false claims about Twitter promoting free speech on the microblogging site, as Musk has repeatedly censored links to rival services like Mastodon & Substack, as well as banned users for promoting rival services too.
Overall, it was a decent interview, & whether you like or loathe Elon Musk (or Bill Maher), watching this episode was very informative.
