Many #Autistic #Elder #Women who spent much of their lives #Masking, as well as those of us of any gender with #EatingDisorders might identify with a passage at the end of the original story of #TheLittleMermaid
by Hans Christian Andersen.

I know I do. I'll be quoting the passage in a reply to this post.

The new film ends in a very satisfying but different way: romantic love between humans and merpeople is possible, but the bonds of family are just as strong. Oh and by the way, just go and see it on the big screen. Worth it at any price.

But for those of us who found something to identify with in the predicament of the "fish out of water" who could not speak to explain herself or her importance... well, a lot of us don't make it to the age I have. I am blessed to have arrived at something like what's described below, but rest assured I'm still alive and kicking.

Today in Labor History May 26, 1824: Women and girls led the first recorded factory strike in US history. 102 women and girls walked off the job at Slater Mill, in Pawtucket, and picketed their factory.
Two days prior, the owners had increased working hours by an hour per day with no additional pay. Additionally, they slashed the pay of power-loom weavers by 25%. Those affected were all women and girls aged 15 to 30. According to the bosses, the girls had already been earning “extravagant wages.”

The owners were caught off guard. They were not expecting a protest. Indeed, no U.S. factories had ever experienced a strike. Perhaps even more shocking, other workers and community members joined them in solidarity. They blockaded the mills and hurled rocks at the mansions of the owners. On the final day of the week-long strike, workers set one of the mills on fire. The next day, the owners agreed to negotiate and agreed on a compromise.

In vitro gametogenesis (expected to happen in 5–25 years) will give #women yet another tool to increase their reproductive options. (Not so much men — gay or straight — as a woman are still needed for gestation.)

Today, women don’t need a committed partner, or even a one-night stand. They can freeze their eggs and postpone maternity. They can get regular eggs from a donor for free (or the best ones paying money). They can get regular sperm from a donor for free (or the best one paying money; ie pick and choose a “father” online). They alone decide about abortion. They can have their partners raise a child that is not their own. They can give birth alone, leave “name of the father” blank on the form, and nobody even bothers to find out whether there might be an unwilling father out there, or questions the merits of deciding to raise a kid without a father.

Men can’t do any of that.

Talk about “reproductive rights”.

An artificial womb will the be biggest advance in favour of #men. It might be the great equalizer. Gestation will cease to be a burden, a risk, and a privilege exclusive to women. Imagine a single man becoming a father, and nobody even asking him “who’s the mother?” or “who donated the eggs?” (Sounds heartless, sad, creepy? It’s just what we have now, only with the sexes reversed.)

#ArtificialWombs are not expected to arrive any time soon, though.

Six weeks pregnant does NOT mean 6 weeks after conception.

Weird, but true.

Medically, women are considered pregnant apx 2 weeks BEFORE actual conception.

Many women don't even know they're pregnant at 6 weeks.

#Women #Pregnant #Pregnancy #RoeVWade #Abortion #AbortionBan #SouthCarolina #USA #News #Meme

Meme with text:
"Six weeks pregnant” does NOT mean six weeks after conception.

Being “6 weeks pregnant” means the egg was actually fertilized apx 4 weeks ago, and the first missed period was less than 2 weeks ago. This is because pregnancy is measured from the first day of the last period (which is easily observable), NOT from actual conception (which is not observable). Medically, women are considered pregnant apx 2 weeks BEFORE actual conception.

Most women ovulate (ovaries release an egg) apx 2 weeks after their period. From ovulation, there are 3 - 4 days in which a sperm can fertilize the egg, and then the fertilized egg can attach to the uterine wall (conception).

The very earliest one can test for pregnancy is “4 weeks pregnant” (which is really 2 weeks after conception). However, because women’s menstrual cycles vary, and because the hormones that reveal pregnancy can be slower to rise in some women, it is very easy for a woman to be “6 weeks pregnant” and not know it.

Text from article:
The research also highlighted a number of other pregnancy complications that medical providers said were impacted by the Supreme Court ruling. Patients were unable to terminate pregnancies with fetal anomalies, medical providers said, while others faced delays in obtaining the medication necessary to treat an early miscarriage.

Concerns surrounding abortion bans led doctors to delay or deny several treatments unrelated to abortion, according to the report. In one case, a clinician refused to remove an intrauterine device (IUD) for a patient who was between 10 and 12 weeks pregnant, despite the fact that the IUD had partially expelled, increasing the patient’s risk of infection or miscarriage.

“The doctor did not feel comfortable removing the IUD because it could cause a miscarriage,” wrote one physician consulted on the case. “The context provided was concern over the recent changes in law that create [the] possibility for felony charges for providers causing abortion in our state.”
