It's amazing palaeontologist Mary Anning's birthday today. She was born in 1799 in Dorset and made many important discoveries. Celebrate her! But also refute all the ignorant claims that Anning was the one and only woman of her time interested in palaeontology. She wasn't even the only woman in Lyme Regis collecting fossils! What about Anning's friend Elizabeth Philpot? What about Etheldred Bennett in Wiltshire, the neighbouring county, who was actively engaged in palaeontology from at least 1809? Why is history of science produced by supposedly respectable institutions, who claim they're promoting women in STEM, still disappearing or denigrating women's achievements? Infuriating.

Manuela Beltrán Is a Colombian Hero. What If She Never Existed?
Today in 1908, Ethel Catherwood was born. In 1928, with the Matchless Six, Canada's first Olympic women's team, she won gold in the high jump.
Called the Saskatoon Lily, she was offered a movie contract after the Olympics but turned it down.
She died in 1987.

The crew of Artemis II will embark on the first human spaceflight mission to the moon since the Apollo era, more than 50 years ago. Last November, NASA launched the Artemis I mission, a test of the massive Space Launch System rocket and an uncrewed Orion capsule. That set up Artemis II, the first of NASA's new missions to the moon with astronauts aboard. It will not launch until at least November 2024. Riding in an Orion capsule, the astronauts will travel on an elliptical orbit that loops as far out as 1,800 miles above Earth, giving the astronauts time to see how Orion's systems work. It will then travel toward the moon, using its gravity to sling back to Earth for a Pacific Ocean splashdown.

NASA on Monday announced the crew of Artemis II, four astronauts who will head to the moon within the next two years. The crew will travel around the moon and back on a 10-day mission.
The crew of three Americans and one Canadian will be the first humans to fly toward the moon in more than 50 years. They are: Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Reid Wiseman of NASA, and Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency. Glover, the first Black man assigned as a crew member on the International Space Station, will serve as the mission's pilot. Koch, who holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman, will serve as a mission specialist. Wiseman, who served as NASA's chief astronaut, will be the commander. Hansen, one of four active Canadian astronauts, will also serve as a mission specialist

Margaret Morse Nice pioneered a new branch of science called ethology, which focused on understanding animals by watching what they did and why.
Despite not being allowed to finish her Ph.D. when she got married, and despite a lack of institutional support, Nice excelled in a male-dominated field and produced an impressive body of literature, publishing hundreds of articles and thousands of reviews.

I learned about somebody incredible today, and her story is perhaps even more incredible.
I feel the need to put a content warning here, as there’s some tough reading. But I simply can’t risk people not learning about her by putting a proper CW on the post.
The person in question was a woman driven to suicide, who was resuscitated (before it was a medical common practice) and then became one of the most important philosophers and writers in modern history, perhaps all of history.
Her name was Mary Wollstonecraft.

#MPMonday today is Margaret Bondfield, MP for Northampton 1923-24 & Wallsend 1926-31. In June 1929 Bondfield was appointed Minister of Labour in Ramsay MacDonald's government, becoming the first ever female cabinet minister and female privy counsellor.
Good morning! Today is the 68th anniversary of Claudette Colvin's refusal to give up her bus seat to a white person in Montgomery, Alabama. Only 15 years old at the time, she was then arrested and ultimately convicted of disturbing the peace, violating segregation laws, and assaulting police, and was made a ward of the state. This spurred the Women's Political Council, a local Black women's leadership organization, to gather other women who'd been treated similarly together to organize a boycott and court challenge. It's widely believed that Miss Colvin's youth, dark skin, and pregnancy by a married man made them look to Rosa Parks instead as a test case for the boycott. Miss Colvin served as a witness in the lawsuit though, and went to the Supreme Court. Browder v. Gayle was a thorough rejection of Plessy v. Ferguson, especially given that both cases involved transportation.

Happy Birthday to Maria Tallchief, born in Fairfax, Oklahoma, a small town on the Osage reservation, #OnThisDay in 1925.
Tallchief was one of the greatest dancers of all time and the first American dancer to achieve the title of prima ballerina. After her retirement, she founded the Chicago City Ballet in 1980.

Journalist & suffragette Ida B. Wells-Barnett was a founding member of the NAACP. She was known for her tireless crusade against lynching.
