[P] I do want to add that I don't disagree with Maasively's position that it's dumb to gate story behind raids & renown. I was never a fan of this design choice. What I vehemently disagree with, however, is that a story is inconsistent if the viewer is unable—due to their own biases—to see the trees for the forest. Yes, I did get that the right way around. If you perceive only homogeneous groups, not diverse persons, you can't call the writing inconsistent for that personal failing.
1.) Fyrakk was void-corrupted (shadowflame);
2.) The existence of Vyranoth proves you can't paint all Incarnates with the same brush (never do that anyway):
3.) Every titan and dragon is a person, with motivations good, bad, or anywhere in-between;
4.) If you're too binary to comprehend this nuance, that doesn't suggest internal inconsistency.
I'll be frank, I didn't expect such an immediate example.
[P] So "bad writing" to a NT is nuance, a lack of homogeneity, and where a very different entity can—via reason, diplomacy, & compromise—become "us." This is, of course, upsetting as dissimilar == inferior/savage == evil, so having an inferior, savage, and evil dissimilarity join "us" is disquieting. But they can't articulate their hatred of otherness, so they call it "bad writing." NTs have to use some sort of insulting label to express their ire.
[P] It makes no sense, but see, them's the bad guys. There can be no nuance, thus "them" should always be irrational & destructive to justify us butchering 'em before they can do that to us! The evil plotters! So Vyranoth should be a wild beast of destruction so "we" can feel justified in wanting to abuse & butcher her. A "them" that wants to reason & converse makes "us" uncomfortable, as the justifications for harm become so much more delusional.
[P] I've seen neurotypicals refer to this as bad writing. Why? Two reasons. The first is that the bad guys are the bad guys, and if anyone introspectively reflects, realises they're fighting for the wrong team, and has a change of heart? That's bad writing, apparently. The other? Apparently a pragmatic, logical, ethical person should be incapable of forgiveness, she should want to irrationally destroy everything. What sense does that make?
[P] As such, it makes perfect logical sense that Vyranoth would forgive Alexstrasza and join the aspects. She witnessed how a manipulative Iridikron used and corrupted a naive Fyrakk, just as the titans had once done with Alexstrasza, but Alex found her own path—one of balance, where there is no one correct force, and that all are welcome if they're willing to cooperate and treat one another equally. Fhere is no irrationality here, except...
[P] Vyranoth has witnessed Alexstrasza's guilt and remorse for her hand in what the titans did, so she sees these Aspects of a very different world would fight tooth & claw to protect proto-drakes and their young from corruption, which is all Vyranoth ever wanted. She sees how the sides have changed, how the Incarnates are now as problematic as the titans once were, and she sees a chance to mend old wounds and get her old friend back.
[P] Now, the Incarnates, on the other hand, have become maddened by pride and void corruption. All Fyrakk—one of Vyranoth's fellow Incarnates—wants is to see the world burn. What would that do to ensure a stable future for proto-drakes? And Iridikron—the only other Incarnate—has buggered off on a mission of personal vengeance. The Incarnates, Vyranoth excepted, have no interest in aiding proto-drakes, they care only to serve their own eelfish ends
[P] She sought to keep the eggs of her family free from titan corruption. In Azeroth's distant-past, Alexstrasza was a naive patsy to the titans, she allowed them to do terrible things. This drove a wedge between Alex & Vyranoth as the two were once very close. That was then, however, eras ago. Today, Alexstrasza realises that she was used by the titans, and thus no longer has any fondness for them. She'd protect proto-drake eggs, not corrupt them.
[P] In order to analyse Vyranoth as a character, we must first examine her personality and then her motivations. So, her personality is that she is an ethical person, but also very pragmatic and logical, which gives her a vulcan-like (Star Trek) quality. Vyranoth is very eloquent and well-spoken, and it comes from a place of deep-thought and consideration. She would do whar's best to fit her goals, but what are her goals?
[P] I want to talk more about WoW lore for a bit to highlight this lack of nuance neurotypicals have. I see talk of the lore being poorly-written vis-a-vis Vyranoth and the Incarnates, but that's only true if you think of the Incarnates as a homogeneous group—which they very clearly aren't. So what you have to do to understand Vyranoth is consider her as a person in order to understand her. This will go somewhere.
[P] WoW is playing around with this and it's really breaking neurotypicals. It's fascinating to watch, they cannot wrap their minds around how a group can have all kinds of people in it. No the neurotypical worldview says: Group must be homogeneously unified in being GUD or BAD, there is nothing else! They actually refer to nuance as "bad, confusing writing" and that's dizzying to me... I'm confounded by their two-dimensionality.
J'avoue, je suis allé en tank en raid lfr sans lire la strat et en attendant que les autres m'expliquent la strat si c'est nécessaire et que ça sort un peu de l'ordinaire.
Y'a quoi ?
Let’s be honest; I wasn’t really ready for the Donmar Warehouse Tempest. I mean, I know it and teach it and all of that is in hand
But Harriet Walter is so clear about the nature of Prospero’s suffering that after watching the balloon scene today with my students I’m just pretty well wrecked
[P] "No one wants to play World of Friendscraft!" says the middle-aged, NT Gamer.
I kinda do, actually. If it means being mature & clever enough to be willing to try diplomacy & compromise, rather than resorting to angry us-vs.-them social identity tribalism like petulant, small-minded, immature, testosterone-ridden bullies? Yes, I want that. It isn't like I get many games where dissimilarity isn't demonised for whatever reason.
[P] I see so many WoW players being down on Dragonflight, and why? "I want a big bad, the story is boring wothout one!" And can you guess the one connecting thread between examples of "good" stories given? Go on, guess... I bet you can. If you guessed the demonising of otherness and committing "justifiable" acts of harm to the dissimilar? You win!
I wish this wasn't so ubiquitous. I can't escape its gravity well.
On Saturday, I will do a charity stream as part of #JingleJam2023. 🥰
I will be streaming most of the day attempting to draw my characters in #WorldOfWarcraft - and fail horribly, probably. 🙃
[P] Well, as much of a pariah as it makes me? I celebrate WoW for having the guts to do what they did. It's probably going to be a once in a generation experience, where concepts like—as I said—diplomacy, compromise, and realising that dissimilarity isn't evil are proudly centre-stage. Of all of the things, of all of the games out there, WoW has been the one that's helped me cope the most. Take that as you will.
[P] And that's just going to reaffirm this in the subconscious of so many devs. That Blizzard tried this, and they failed, because concepts like compromise, diplomacy, and not demonising the "inferior" dissimilar are failures. It'll crystallise and further lionise that the most successful way to make a game will be to concentrate on the evil of dissimilarity. Which is... what it is. Very human.
[P] This is going to send the message that anything that doesn't satisfy the "Unga bunga! Me am US, me smash THEM! Me want sweaty man hero to smash THEM with!" crowd is going to be an abject failure. It's maddening because something like Dragonflight is so singularly unique, it is a snowflake in the real sense of being so, and... It's bad 'cause Blizzard did it. So everything about it must be awful.
[P] It's funny, I find myself in the same position of being the pariah (I am ALWAYS the pariah) because Blizzard's executives did some horrible things. I mean, it doesn't matter that this game wasn't made by them, it doesn't matter that their creative people aren't like that and that they clearly love this game. Nah. It's just a social identity thing to hate WoW, and thus to hate Dragonflight.
[P] So now we have WoW... I feel like it's such an opposite example of the one I just gave, as I said. The "bad guys" were misunderstood, mistreated, tormented, and desperate. So what do we do? Do we abuse them, slaughter their kids, and either butcher the shit out of them or drive them to suicide and celebrate it? No. We make peace. We find a way to compromise. And that's so depressingly uncommon.
[P] Why did this happen? A sweaty man, of the similar variety, told them that the dragon was an evil manipulator. That's all it takes, and the "Unga bunga! Me am US, me smash THEM with US-like sweaty man!" response. I tried talking to the community about it, and I was mocked. When it was clear I had a solid, reasonable argument and I wasn't being nasty to anyone about it? I was silenced. That's how it be.
[P] What brought this to a head for me? There was a certain dragon in a game who was trying to ease suffering with their power, to save lives, end wars... I related to them as they were an abuse-victim who found such torment abhorrent. I say were, since they were further abused, forced to watch their kids be butchered by the players while trapped, and were then driven to suicide—only for that to be celebrated.
[P] I just wanted to air my thoughts anyway. Who knows? I might be dead soon regardless, so I might as well. I just wish the human experience wasn't like this, the homogeneous us vs. the diverse them. Oh look, it's a pretty white human butchering the dissimilar again, because isn't that the most popular thing in the world. And it's truly depressing, but it's... so human.
[P] Sadly, compromise and diplomacy isn't what I feel the majority of the WoW player-base wants. They've been vocal about it. "Unga bunga! Me am US, me smash THEM! Me want sweaty man hero who smash THEM with US!" It's disheartening, because this is humanity's truth. But it isn't mine. I've found this willingness to compromise with other groups in WoW to be fulfilling, uplifting, and revitalising.
[P] And if the "bad guys" are misunderstood, or say, abused and in a desperate situation? WE should be able to reach out to them, offer compromise, and diplomacy. Sadly, like healing, that's just not how it's done, is it? No. "Me am US! Me smash THEM!" I know. I know. I live this, so I'm aware. And yet WoW, of all the fucking things... We made peace with the Incarnates, the Infinite dragonflight... It's bizarre!
[P] I feel so out of place here. I want compromise, I want us to find a middle-ground. I want the "bad guys" to be defined not by how dissimilar they are, but by the acts of cruelty they commit. I don't think social identity brains could grasp "bad guys" who look and act "just like us" though, I think that might make their brains explode. It's just the impression I get.
"It's a damn paradox!" *KABOOM!*
[P] I've always felt othered, I feel that's just a neurodiverse experience because humanity adores social identity and homogenising within groups. The entire human experience does feel like the homogeneous us vs. the dissimilar them. I think that, above everything else, is the most human state. So I understand why entertainment is like this. I get that.
[P] As a neurodiverse person, I often feel alien and outside of the human species. I feel very, very outside. It feels like humanity, in general, wants "Me am US, me smash THEM!" and that's the be-all-and-end-all of it. And for wanting anything different, I just... I feel so completely alien. I've spoken of wanting games where the hero character is a healer, but so few would even want that.
[P] Blizzard, as a business, may be awful. This much is true. Their creatives, however, feel like an open-minded, kind-hearted lot and I wish that was more true throughout the games industry. I'm so tired of the endless trope of humanity good, similarity good, anything dissimilar is inferior, inferior is evil, evil must die. I'm just so sick of it.
[P] It's funny, you know. I've been fighting for my house, lately. I may have cancer. And of all the things I'm thankful for... I'm living in the most peculiar timeline, because WoW is one of them. I don't understand why WoW, of all the games, is the ONLY one lately that isn't openly demonising dissimilarity, accepts that dissimilar != evil, and that compromises can be made. Why is that?
I got myself a Melitta Aromaboy, which is the world's cutest coffee maker.
(Standard mug for scale)
We have a big beans-to-coffee machine at the office, but I simply don't like the coffee it brews. I want plain old filter coffee without the crèma or roasty espresso taste. I tried a french press, but that gives it an earthy coldbrew-like taste that I also don't like. It also tends to be too cold once it finished brewing. After that, I used the stovetop espresso maker you can actually see in the background. It worked well and tasted great, but it took a bit too long and it tended to give a loud bang as the metal warped due to the heat. I decided I need a regular old filter coffee machine. But an entire filter machine just for one person? Yep, turns out, that totally exists! I got a used one on Ebay and I absolutely love the retro look, but they actually still produce them! It comes in black, white or beige as seen here. ☕
anyone else planning on playing #wow season of discovery?
im really trying to like wow classic era but that exp grind is what holds me back.
If we're going back to Gilneas then I really hope blizzard gives us a transmog top hat so that I can finally realise my dream of a dapper Victorian werewolf #wow
So....I raided ICC last night for the first time!
We didn't beat all the bosses but we got up to professor putricide and wiped a few times there before going back to the Valkyrie boss (easy peasy) to finish the night. Even though we didn't finish and it was slightly stressful, I had a good time. Even got a few small upgrades for my dwarf pally.
Also, I am getting close to maxing out blacksmithing (446/450) and DAMN, it's a grindfest. But I know once I get there it'll be worth it, cause then I could spend like 2-3 hours a week and not have to pay for a WoW subscription.
Say what you want about the WoW token, but for those that prefer to play the game instead of pay the game, it's pretty useful🤣
Having gotten more confident in drawing my druid, I made a proper ref image, after which I got heavily into making stickers.
Then I decided to re-colour them and pack them into Telegram packs in case anyone else wanted them.
For consistency purposes I also made a colour palette for myself, with the base and line colours, and to make sure I knew what was what I made little icons I could use for colour dropping.
Ya know, if WoW gameplay EVER looked as good as it's cutscenes, a metric shit ton more people would play it.
Instead, Dragonflight looks like I'm taking my kids to Disneyland. They try to convince me that there's some big bad evil thing lurking behind every corner but come on, look at the scenery. What the fuck is the evil dude doing? Spreading fertilizer and painting trees? 🤦♂️
I am a FIRM believer in "graphics aren't everything" but the world is not. You can't give us epic cutscenes of great battles and death and despair, then let me open the game to see Mickey Mouse Clubhouse in full force. It kills the immersion.

I REALLY hope Blizzard has learned from their mistakes and leaves a WotLK server or two up when Cataclysm drops. If not, I'll be quitting yet again just like I did 15 years ago.
Cataclysm isn't classic. There's no doubt about that and if they refuse to leave some servers in classic, then what's the point of calling it classic anymore? It's just retail light.

Current idea (not mine) has evolved into setting up tents with designated gnomes to hand out pink shirts and pants near the starting point
They also tested out the tents - apparently they only disappear at character log off, which is suitable for the purpose
So....I joined a WoW WotLK Classic guild about a week ago called "Friends". Things did not go well. Spoiler alert, they definitely aren't friends.
Me and a personal friend joined this guild. Before we even did anything, I explained that I was VERY new and would need pretty much everything explained to me, in terms of raiding and gearing.
Literally the second night I was there, we ran Trial of the Crusader 10 man. It didn't go very well. It took us awhile, but the leaders were not explaining everything well AT ALL.
Then they proceeded to complain that the raid didn't go well in a later discord message.
After seeing a few more days of this, my friend decides to leave the guild while I was in the middle of a mount run with them.
This is where shit hit the fan. After he left, they proceeded to berate and belittle him in a voice chat he wasn't apart of, alongside blasting LFG chat claiming he'd only used them for gear and all this other BS.
Like how childish are you? It's a video game. Grow up.
I need to stop playing multiplayer games.🤦🏻♂️
TW: Mild discussion of chronic health issues and grief.
I really miss being able to play MMO's, especially #WoW. I cannot cognitively keep up with worlds like that anymore and it makes me sads.
Everything feels like a job, a chore, a huge undertaking. When I can only spend about an hour a day playing a game (thanks, health)... that's just not it for me anymore. No more long play sessions.
Does anyone else out there feel this sort of grief related to #Illness?
My Officers are making pink shirts for the annual Great Gnomeregan Run 💗 This is our fifth year
i'm entering stand-up comedy levels with the nonsense from my folks.
on video just now, mom asked me if i had made any new art. i said "no. no inspiration lately" and she jumped in with "WHY NOT?!"
it was sooo outrageous that i just started heckling her. i was like "seriously?! 'why not'??? it's inspiration, what am i supposed to do about it?? and when was the last time *you* got yourself out of an inspiration drought? yea, i thought not!" and she started laughing. she said: "i wasn't *blaming* you, i was just saying that it's a problem and how are you dealing with it" (which is...certainly one way of approaching things....)
later in the call, she sadly told me that today it was raining and 65F (they just had a horrible heat wave with multiple days of 100+ temperatures). i responded "but you're probably pretty grateful to be out of that extreme heat..?" and she went "ehhhh..." so i started heckling her again haha "you wanna go back to 104??" and she went "nooooo, like....83....but anything below that and i get coooold!" i was just speechless lol. so ungrateful, it's remarkable. no wonder she's never satisfied!
but at least this time it was funny and not sad or grumpy. maybe heckling is the answer. just make fun of them if they say ridiculous things to you!

In #MacOS 14 #Sonoma when playing a#VideoGame, a special mode called gaming mode will kick in, theoretically improving the game’s performance. It would be all cool and neat if not for the fact that when the game’s window is frontmost, all notifications that go through the system’s Notification Center like Messages, FaceTime and Mail get silenced. Not only their sound, but also the banners that they generate, and so VoiceOver does not react hem. I have Ogot to the menu bar and turned off the gaming mode, however it didn’t help and I still don’t get notifications. I mean, my guild mates and dungeon mates from #WoW and even myself benefit from it, but there are 2 (two) people I always want to get notifications from. Is there a way I can do it somehow? Apparently some folks have been trolling AI bots scraping subreddits and it resulted in this amazing article about the introduction of "Glorbo" to World of Warcraft.
Now I really want to add Glorbo to my WoW server. 😂
