Hey folks, I understand that Wrestlecon is coming up. Maybe consider NOT going because they openly welcomed Rick Steiner, a man who verbally harassed a woman (Wrestler Gisele Shaw) loudly and publicly berating her with transphobic vitriol in front of fans in a previous convention. The Wrestlecon organizers claim he's apologized and "learned his lesson" but this apology was not made to the miss Shaw.
I've quietly admired @ajroach42's posts of late. They've shown a vulnerability I strive for [0]. The linked thread ([0]) is absolute gold. It's a beautiful story and realization.
I think I do okay, but if there's a "journey", I think they're further along in it.
My own small piece of this has been rediscovering some interests I cast aside as a teenager. I think it started in college, when I thought I needed to take myself more seriously in order to be taken seriously.
The most recent of these (re)discoveries is my affinity for #wrestling. I always enjoyed playing it as a kid and would catch it on tv when I could. Most importantly, it was probably my favorite thing to play when spending the night at friends' houses.
I was never allowed to have a gaming console - my parents let me have a computer if I built it. That was good enough for playing video games, but wrestling games are just so much better on consoles. And so, for me, there's a lot of nostalgia wrapped up in late nights with friends playing a wrestling game. If memory serves, I think it was #WWF No Mercy on the N64.
I think when I got to college, I tried to reinvent myself. Weirdly, as a more "cultured" or "erudite" individual. That was an odd choice given I didn't go to an Ivy League school - in fact, I went to a huge football and basketball school. I just sort of shoved aside some of those interests like #wrestling. That continued into my professional career, but Microsoft was interesting. It's so big and diverse, that I found folks that had all kinds of interests that I used to follow.
Anyway, I'm not sure where I was taking that story. I've started to watch wrestling again with my partner, mainly we watch #AEW together. She's been curiously interested in it and that's been fun! Her sister's boyfriend is an amateur wrestler and I think, in an indirect way, talking with him reawakened this for me.
