#WordWeavers 12.2 — Secondary character POV: how would you feel if you were a celebrity?

I was at the her side when my friend suddenly became the second most important person in the world. I'm there with her much of the day, when I am not training to protect her or attending classes with her, so... Arguably... I am a celebrity? Um... How would I feel?

I like my new armor?

#PennedPossibilities 151 — Are you proud of your MC? Has she accomplished anything worthy of that pride and satisfaction?

My MC has gotten herself into a lot of bad things, illegal things. Similar to Rebecca Rabbit, who was "drawn that way," my MC was raised and manipulated into becoming someone's sharp tool. The wrong person grabbed the hilt. Such things can't end well, can they? She's made the right choices for the right reasons and saved many lives along the way, but it's not all she's done. Judged by 21st century morality, she'd be found lacking. She thinks she's evil, but I disagree.

If our world had more people who think as she does, on the whole it would be a better place.

I attended an editing workshop yesterday offered by Monique Franz of Kinsman Quarterly. It was about editing stories for submission into writing contests. She showed the rubrics used by the magazine to determine whether or not entries would make it to the next round. It was very informative, and with that and the feedback I’ve received from critique groups, I revised my #LandBack revenge story “The Tupilaq” into something much stronger and entered it into the Iridescence Award competition. #writing #WritingCommunity #WritingContests #revision #BIPOCWriters

20. Fog & rain have shape-shifted December into November. Good day for reading.

To prepare for my final revision of #HiramFalls I am reading several authors to see how they handle omniscient POV while diving deep into their characters: 'Music in the Dark' by Sally Magnusson (Scottish author; check her out), 'This is Happiness' by Niall Williams (Irish) and 'Parker's Back' by Flannery O'Connor.

Illuminating. And helpful.

I’ve never sent an ARC to anyone named “Alexander.” Also, this person only has 15 total books read on their #GoodReads profile. The other 14 a different genre, then there’s my book. Best theory I can come up with is this person didn’t want to ruin their pristine account by giving a 1 star so used another account to do the dirty work. #writingcommunity #author @bookstodon

#WritersCoffeeClub Dec 3: What writing advice would you give your younger self?

Hide that notebook.

When I was away for a weekend once, my mother did what she called "dinging out" my room. She would go in and throw away anything she deemed to be junk.

In this specific case, I was a high school senior ... and nearly every short story and poem I had written and carefully saved went out with the kitchen trash.

I am sure most of it was poorly written, to be honest; I had no real life experience to draw on, and hadn't practiced my craft for long (obviously). But sometimes I think it would be fun to look at how far I've come from those band fics and AB/AB poems.

It started off as a "depluralise a film" meme, with "Jaw" as an example.

...which led to someone suggesting "The Jaw of ___" as a horror title.

...which became "The Eye of Prometheus".

...and then "The Prometheus Gambit".

...but might get changed to "Prometheus Never Saw It Coming", since it's more absurdist SFF than horror at this point. 😏

Look, guys, just because you're published doesn't mean you can be condescending to those who are not published by "official" outlets. Who gives you the right??

Dangit, life is getting in the way, meaning no time for writing. I don't feel like a whole person if I can't write or at least do a little editing!

If you have a way to maintain your sanity in this situation, I'd love to hear it.

I wrote a new short story which is up for you to read! Thoughts and feedback are welcome. It's a short (1500 words ish) humour-fantasy piece entitled Life, Unbidden.

This tale may contain partial necromancy, confusing mix-ups between similarly named magic practitioners, storks, and over-the-top runic inscriptions.

Hope you enjoy it :) Boosts welcome and appreciated!

Pasque flowers. Perchtoldsdorf, near Vienna, early 2023.

I just got mad on #Substack Notes. This is not a good sign 😂

I think this article captures what I have feeling lately about the damn place.

Notes has made the place more competitive, cliquish and social media-ish.

But what made me 🔥 is when established writers lecture me about how I should think or behave as a writer "to be successful".

I hate condescending remarks.

This morning I got an email from Amazon UK saying they are considering some of my books for their Kindle Daily Deal promotion and they wanted my permission to use one or more of the books for the deal. My permission is required because they will lower the price for the day (or however long the "deal" lasts, and it can be more than a day) and of course my royalties for any sales at the lower price will be lower as well.

Have any of you done this? Did it really add up to more sales? Was it worth letting them lower the price?

Look, #Substack usually only promotes #writers with thousands of subs from a marketing standpoint. That's understandable. However, when you search the categories for something to read, popular writers appear on top.
As a reader, this has often been my frustration cos I'm a weirdo that likes to read NEW and NOT FAMOUS writers. The only way to find these people is to scroll down endlessly that page to the very bottom.
As a writer, well, that's another story.

I think some famous writer just called me entitled on #Substack Notes 😅
I was trying to tell her that Substack makes it hard for new writers to be seen, and she says that I am being entitled and that you need to do the work before your work is worth reading. I mean, why does this rub me the wrong way, this elitist attitude among the "published"? 1/2

#WritersCoffeeClub 27: How do you feel about the use of AI in writing?

Oh, yeah. There it is"

"Don't create anything, copy existing works from existing artists and alter it sufficiently to escape copyright laws. It's the largest theft of property ever-"

“The human mind is not, like ChatGPT and its likes, a glutton statistical machine for structure recognition, that swallows. hundreds of terabytes of data and snatches the most plausible answer to a conversation or the most likely to a scientific question.” The other way around... the human mind is a surprisingly efficient and elegant system operating with a limited amount of information. It doesn't try to injure raw correlations from data but tries to create explanations. [... ]

Let's stop calling it "Artificial Intelligence" and call it what it is: "plagiarism software." Don't create anything, copy existing works from existing artists and alter it sufficiently to escape copyright laws. It's the largest theft of property ever since Native American lands by European settlers. " Noam Chomsky, New York Times - March 8, 2023

Alright, I just joined mastodon as an independent author.

Who are must follows in the mastodon #writingcommunity ?

2023-11-27: At what point during the writing of your WIP do you know what the last line is going to be?

It depends. Everything is changeable until I've finished the final draft. That said, I have written the final line of the final chapter of one book I haven't even started yet. The final line is: It was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen in his life. That will likely change.

Every Friday I update my writing goals. I mean, I know, it’s Sunday. But generally? Friday. I intended last week to write for 8 hours and I wrote for, ahem, 5 hours 10 minutes. HOWEVER, I also intended to finish my short story AND I DID. I am really, really proud of this story (and especially proud because I sent it to a person whose opinion I value very much who loved it) and I have sky high hopes for (see replies)

Star Diver

I love watching the stars through the window. How they get swallowed by darkness and soon reappear when an asteroid passes through between me and them. The faint flickering of our own solar system’s sun. The vastness of cold, dark space. So peaceful, awe-inspiring. Moments like this are my favorite. Strapped into one of the passenger seats, alone on the observation deck, just me, my notebook and my window into space. When I listen carefully, I can just about make out the faint humming of the ship’s generators. Occasionally, I hear the propulsion system spooling up to make a minor course correction or to avoid hitting an asteroid. But other than that, it’s quiet.

We are silent running, far from the usual traffic routes. Our destination is the Deep Space Horizon mining rig. One of the many run by Mt. Fuji Co. Rumor has it that contact has been lost to the rig. Apparently Hirasawa Outpost doesn’t get any response. But the basic telemetry data is still being broadcast. We are trying to get close enough to find out more without being detected by anyone. This far out, corruption is a big issue and we don’t know who we can trust. Better stay unnoticed, just passively observing. At least that is the plan.

It is a long and slow journey. I’ve started reading Grandma’s diaries again to make use of the time. She was born on Planet Earth. Can you imagine? Living on a planet? So fascinating to experience her life on Earth through her eyes, through her words. Gravity strong enough to keep you firmly on the ground. Being able to do E V A without any protective gear because there’s a perfectly breathable atmosphere outside. Workout being an optional part of life, a spare time activity even. Recreational. A day and night cycle, timezones, ... Speaking of night time, barely any stars are visible from the surface of the planet. Water in the atmosphere (they call this phenomenon „clouds“) can obstruct the view. And a thing called „light pollution“ which apparently lit up the sky bright enough to drown out the stars.

Grandma was one of the young astronauts that went on the journey to the edge of the solar system. It was a tough decision for her because she knew she would never return and the success of the project that would eventually lead to the colony on Eris was far from guaranteed. Astronaut, what a word. I believe it was derived from an ancient language and means something like „Star Diver“. Space travel was such a rare and special thing that they had a fancy word for the people doing it.

Oh, here goes the propulsion system again. Spooling up, then the whole ship rocks a little, then everything returns to silence. That reminds me, I have a couple of things to do. Can’t spend all day on the observation deck.

(to be continued)
