It's pretty phenomenal how well Matthew Vaughn wrote Magneto, and it's pretty appalling how poorly Bryan Singer understood the same character.
It's too bad that Fox elbowed Vaughn in favor of Singer after revitalized the franchise with "First Class".

The X-Men books have finally gone through the motions of committing another mutant genocide on the island where mutants achieved a self-sustaining nation with a culture about preserving their peace. Everyone on one team. No good mutants and bad mutants (mostly). Humans on notice that their bullshit oppression will no longer be tolerated.
House of X/Powers of X is still the greatest comic of all time.
But this... And after "Inferno" last year? It's literally so heartbreakingly Queerphobic and Bad that I can't even recommend getting invested in the AMAZING stories that spiraled out of HOX/POX anymore.

This year the Sequencial Summer Slam is about recreating a #comic page. I choose to do the page 15 of Uncanny #xmen 108, ie the birth of #Phoenix ! The original page by Dave Cockrum is iconic, but also quite vintage I decided to make the layout less structured and to give a more sensual pause to the emerging character.

I was really obsessed at that time with drawing the X-Men but I wasn't the chosen.
So I could only draw issues 4 to 6 of the next season.
I was destroyed, it was my dream job and I knew I was the right one for that book.

I had made an illustration of the whole team and… right time right place.
I even proposed a redesign for Storm's suit that wasn't accepted.
I even drew a couple of big monsters, with some kaiju vibes.
The illustrations I've shown are the ones I drew to get a sense of who the characters really were but they're not sketches, their goal is to be beautiful.
These ones here are real sketches, they're done as studies to understand graphically how things work.
There was also Pixie, I didn't know her too much but ended up being charming.
Domino was the character I met in there, there's always dangerous and mean in her.
What did I learn? That her "eyepatch" goes on her left eye.
We had Colossus as the ONLY guy in the team.
I realized that he's there only to show how strong is the villain.
It was a team formed almost entirely by women.

So what are superheroes like in actual comics vs. their Hollywood incarnations? #Marvel is a lot more progressive. (#DC is far less so.) Note the wording: "more progressive". Not "progressive". Because even the most "progressive" of the Marvel long-term titles (the #XMen) is pretty regressive and still suffers from the issue identified in that video: The villains are the only ones who are forces for actual change. (And by extension anybody who wants real change is a villain.)

I once made this diorama (photo 1) w/ #Wolverine, when I showed it on Reddit, someone replied that they remembered an old magazine with a very similar diorama on the cover. It was this magazine: Modeler's Resource issue #56. I would love to read the article, but I can't find it anywhere.
